Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Crop Residue Feed Treatment
Abstract
Crop residue feed treatment is an important practice in livestock production because it can improve the nutritional value, digestibility, and utilisation of agricultural residues used as animal feed. Treatment methods such as urea treatment, chopping, soaking, and other appropriate processing techniques can help improve the feeding quality of crop residues, particularly during periods of feed scarcity. Extension training can provide livestock farmers with the knowledge and practical skills required to adopt appropriate crop residue feed treatment methods and improve the utilisation of locally available feed resources. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of crop residue feed treatment. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training and determine the extent to which training influences their adoption of recommended crop residue treatment practices. It will also identify specific treatment methods adopted by farmers and examine areas where additional training and technical support may be required. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of practices such as chopping, soaking, urea treatment, proper mixing, drying, storage, and appropriate preparation of crop residues for livestock feeding. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of treatment procedures, treatment duration, safe handling of treated residues, appropriate feeding levels, and the benefits of treated crop residues. Extension activities such as practical demonstrations, farm visits, livestock training, field days, and farmer meetings will be assessed in relation to their contribution to the adoption of crop residue feed treatment practices. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected livestock farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their exposure to extension training and their adoption of crop residue feed treatment practices. Data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis may be used to determine the relationship between extension training exposure and farmers’ adoption of recommended crop residue treatment practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater exposure to extension training may demonstrate higher adoption of crop residue feed treatment practices. Practical training is expected to improve farmers’ knowledge of appropriate treatment methods, preparation procedures, safety requirements, and feeding practices. However, factors such as limited access to extension services, inadequate training opportunities, lack of treatment materials and equipment, labour requirements, and limited knowledge of proper treatment procedures may constrain adoption among some farmers. The study will be useful to livestock farmers, agricultural extension agents, animal nutrition specialists, livestock production experts, agricultural research institutions, government livestock agencies, non-governmental organisations, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote efficient utilisation of crop residues as livestock feed. The findings may also assist stakeholders in developing practical and affordable training programmes that demonstrate suitable crop residue treatment techniques for different livestock production systems. The study concludes that extension training can contribute to increased adoption of crop residue feed treatment by providing farmers with practical knowledge and technical skills. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen training through practical demonstrations, farm visits, field days, and accessible educational materials on crop residue treatment. Farmers should also be encouraged to adopt appropriate and safe treatment methods, follow recommended procedures, and properly prepare treated residues to improve feed quality and support sustainable livestock production.
