Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Duck Production Practices

Abstract

Duck production involves the rearing and management of ducks for meat, eggs, breeding, and other agricultural purposes. Appropriate duck production practices are important for maintaining healthy birds, improving growth and egg production, reducing disease occurrence, and increasing the profitability of duck farming. Extension training can provide farmers with practical knowledge and technical skills needed to understand and adopt improved duck production practices. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of duck production practices. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training on duck production and determine how such training influences their adoption of recommended management practices. It will also examine the extent to which farmers apply knowledge and skills acquired through extension training in the management of their duck production enterprises. The study will focus on extension training, farmers’ knowledge of duck production, breed selection, housing, brooding, feeding, watering, sanitation, disease prevention, vaccination, biosecurity, stocking practices, flock management, and record keeping. It will also consider farmers’ participation in practical demonstrations, training sessions, advisory activities, and other extension programmes related to improved duck production. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected duck farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension training and adoption of duck production practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of recommended duck production practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension training may have a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of improved duck production practices. Farmers who receive regular and practical training may demonstrate greater adoption of appropriate housing, feeding, brooding, sanitation, disease prevention, vaccination, biosecurity, and record-keeping practices. The study may also reveal that inadequate training opportunities, limited access to extension personnel, high production costs, and insufficient veterinary support can constrain farmers’ adoption of recommended duck production practices. The study will be useful to duck farmers, agricultural extension agents, poultry and livestock development agencies, veterinary personnel, agricultural development organizations, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information on the contribution of extension training to improved duck production and management. The findings may also assist extension organizations in developing practical training programmes that strengthen farmers’ knowledge and skills for improving duck health, productivity, and farm profitability. The study concludes that extension training is an important component of promoting farmers’ adoption of improved duck production practices because practical education can enhance farmers’ technical knowledge and management skills. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular training, demonstrations, and advisory services on duck housing, feeding, brooding, sanitation, disease prevention, vaccination, biosecurity, and record keeping to support efficient and sustainable duck production.
