Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Farm Drainage Preparedness Measures

Abstract

Farm drainage is important for managing excess water, maintaining suitable soil conditions, protecting crops, and supporting sustainable agricultural production. Heavy rainfall, flooding, waterlogging, and blocked drainage channels can create serious challenges for farmers and may result in crop damage, soil degradation, and reduced farm productivity. Farm drainage preparedness measures are therefore necessary to help farmers anticipate drainage problems and take appropriate preventive actions. Extension training can provide farmers with practical knowledge and skills needed to plan, maintain, and manage drainage systems before water-related emergencies occur. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of farm drainage preparedness measures. The study will assess how exposure to extension training influences farmers’ use of preventive drainage practices and their readiness to manage excess water on agricultural land. It will also determine the extent to which trained farmers adopt recommended measures for maintaining drainage channels and reducing the risk of waterlogging and flooding. The study will focus on extension training, farm drainage preparedness, drainage channel maintenance, waterlogging prevention, runoff management, flood preparedness, temporary drainage structures, drainage blockage prevention, soil moisture management, erosion control, and farm water management. Attention will also be given to farmers’ exposure to practical demonstrations, frequency of training, access to technical drainage information, and the application of recommended drainage preparedness practices on their farms. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension training and adoption of farm drainage preparedness measures. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis may be employed to determine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of drainage preparedness measures. The study is expected to reveal that extension training may positively influence farmers’ adoption of farm drainage preparedness measures. Farmers who receive relevant training may be more likely to regularly clear drainage channels, maintain appropriate water outlets, manage runoff, construct or maintain temporary drainage structures, and take preventive measures against waterlogging. The level of adoption may vary according to farmers’ access to training, availability of farm resources, local drainage conditions, and the suitability of recommended practices. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, irrigation and water management authorities, agricultural development agencies, government institutions, environmental organizations, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information for improving extension programmes that promote proactive drainage management and farm preparedness. The study may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training materials and demonstrations that enable farmers to reduce the effects of excess water on agricultural land. The study concludes that extension training can play an important role in promoting farmers’ adoption of farm drainage preparedness measures by providing relevant knowledge, technical guidance, and practical skills. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen training on drainage preparedness, provide practical demonstrations of drainage maintenance and runoff management, and improve farmers’ access to timely technical information for preventing waterlogging and drainage-related farm losses.
