Abstract
The study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of farm gate management practices. Farm gate management involves the activities and procedures carried out at the point where agricultural produce leaves the farm for sale, storage, transportation, or further handling. Proper farm gate management can help farmers maintain produce quality, organize sales, reduce avoidable losses, and improve the efficiency of handling agricultural products. The study will focus on the extent to which farmers adopt farm gate management practices following extension training. Specific areas will include produce inspection, sorting, grading, weighing, packaging, temporary holding, record keeping, loading, handling, and preparation of farm produce for buyers. Extension training is expected to provide farmers with practical knowledge and skills needed to manage produce effectively at the farm gate and improve the organization of post-harvest activities. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to extension training, knowledge of farm gate management, and adoption of relevant practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal that extension training contributes to farmers’ knowledge and adoption of farm gate management practices. The findings may indicate improvements in produce inspection, sorting, grading, weighing, packaging, handling, temporary storage, record keeping, and preparation of produce for transportation or sale. The study may also identify areas where farmers experience challenges in implementing appropriate farm gate management practices. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ organizations, produce marketers, and policymakers by providing information on the role of extension training in improving farm gate handling and management. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes that strengthen farmers’ post-harvest handling skills and promote better management of agricultural produce before it reaches the market. The study will conclude that effective extension training can enhance farmers’ knowledge and adoption of farm gate management practices. It will recommend that extension officers provide practical demonstrations, farm-level training, advisory visits, and follow-up support on proper produce handling, grading, packaging, weighing, record keeping, and other farm gate activities to reduce losses and improve the quality and market readiness of agricultural produce.
