Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Farm Work Scheduling

Abstract

Farm work scheduling is an important aspect of farm management because timely completion of agricultural activities can influence productivity, labour utilization, cost management, and the successful implementation of production operations. Activities such as land preparation, planting, weeding, fertilization, pest control, irrigation, harvesting, and postharvest handling often need to be performed at appropriate times. Extension training can provide farmers with knowledge and practical skills for organizing farm activities, allocating labour, and planning agricultural operations efficiently. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of farm work scheduling practices. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training, determine their knowledge of farm work scheduling techniques, and examine the extent to which training influences their adoption of systematic scheduling practices. It will also assess the frequency of training and the types of farm management information provided to farmers. The study will focus on extension training, farm work scheduling, farmers’ knowledge, training participation, farm activity planning, labour allocation, task prioritization, seasonal planning, time management, work sequencing, record keeping, farm supervision, timely farm operations, and adoption of recommended scheduling practices. Information will be obtained from farmers to determine their exposure to extension training and the extent to which the knowledge acquired is applied in planning and carrying out farm activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of farm work scheduling practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension training may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of systematic farm work scheduling practices. Farmers who participate in practical training and receive regular advisory support may demonstrate greater use of activity calendars, task prioritization, labour allocation, seasonal planning, work sequencing, and farm records. The study may also indicate that training contributes to improved timeliness of farm operations and more organized use of available labour and farm resources. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, farm managers, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote improved farm management and efficient use of labour and time. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes on farm planning, scheduling, supervision, and record keeping. The study concludes that extension training is an important source of knowledge and practical support for improving farmers’ adoption of farm work scheduling practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer training, practical demonstrations, farm visits, and follow-up advisory services on farm activity planning and scheduling. Extension programmes should emphasize task prioritization, labour allocation, seasonal planning, work sequencing, record keeping, and timely execution of farm operations to promote efficient farm management and improved productivity.
