Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Forage Conservation Practices
Abstract
The study examines the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of forage conservation practices. Forage conservation is an important livestock management practice that enables farmers to preserve green fodder for use during periods of feed scarcity and maintain a relatively reliable supply of livestock feed throughout the year. Proper conservation of forage can help reduce feed shortages, minimize wastage, preserve nutritional value, and support improved livestock productivity. Extension training provides farmers with practical knowledge and skills on appropriate methods of harvesting, drying, storing, and preserving forage. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training on forage conservation and examine the extent to which farmers adopt recommended forage conservation practices. It will also identify the major conservation methods used by farmers and determine the types of training received on forage harvesting, drying, storage, and preservation. The study will consider practices such as hay making, proper drying of forage, appropriate harvesting time, suitable storage methods, protection from moisture, and proper handling of conserved forage. A descriptive survey design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise livestock farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire administered to the sampled farmers. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation will be used to analyze the data, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be employed to determine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of forage conservation practices. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ participation in extension training on forage conservation and the extent of their adoption of recommended practices. It is also expected to identify the common forage conservation methods adopted by farmers and the challenges encountered in conserving forage effectively. The findings may further indicate areas where additional practical training and extension support are required to improve farmers’ forage conservation skills and practices. The study will be useful to agricultural extension officers, livestock development agencies, policymakers, and farmers’ organizations by providing information on the role of extension training in promoting effective forage conservation. The findings may assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes and demonstrations that address farmers’ specific forage conservation needs. Improved conservation practices may help reduce seasonal feed shortages, minimize forage losses, and support more consistent livestock feeding. The study will conclude by assessing the contribution of extension training to farmers’ adoption of appropriate forage conservation practices. Based on the findings, the study will recommend regular practical training, field demonstrations, farm visits, and improved access to technical information on forage conservation methods. These measures may strengthen farmers’ ability to conserve available forage effectively and contribute to sustainable livestock production.
