Abstract
Irrigation systems are important for supporting agricultural production, particularly during periods of inadequate rainfall and dry-season farming. Proper maintenance of irrigation facilities helps ensure efficient water delivery, reduce water losses, prevent equipment failure, and sustain crop productivity. However, inadequate maintenance of irrigation infrastructure can lead to blockages, leakage, poor water distribution, increased operating costs, and reduced irrigation efficiency. Extension training can provide farmers with the knowledge and practical skills required to maintain irrigation facilities effectively. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of improved irrigation maintenance practices. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training and determine the extent to which such training influences their adoption of recommended irrigation maintenance practices. The study will also identify the sources of irrigation maintenance information available to farmers and examine the challenges affecting their adoption of improved maintenance practices. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of practices such as regular inspection of irrigation facilities, cleaning and desilting of canals, removal of weeds and debris, repair of leaks, maintenance of pumps and pipes, cleaning of filters, checking water outlets, prevention of blockages, proper adjustment of irrigation equipment, and timely replacement of damaged components. It will also consider farmers’ participation in extension training, practical demonstrations, frequency of extension contact, access to technical information, and availability of maintenance tools and materials. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their exposure to extension training and adoption of improved irrigation maintenance practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, adoption-level assessment, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of recommended irrigation maintenance practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive regular and relevant extension training may demonstrate greater adoption of improved irrigation maintenance practices. Training and practical demonstrations may improve farmers’ ability to identify irrigation problems, maintain canals, clean equipment, repair leaks, manage pumps and pipes, and prevent blockages. However, inadequate maintenance tools, high repair costs, limited access to technical support, poor availability of spare parts, and insufficient extension contact may continue to affect farmers’ adoption of recommended practices. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, irrigation management agencies, farmer organisations, agricultural development agencies, policymakers, non-governmental organisations, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension training programmes on irrigation maintenance and improving farmers’ technical capacity to manage irrigation facilities. The findings may also support efforts to reduce water losses, improve irrigation efficiency, extend the operational life of irrigation infrastructure, and increase agricultural productivity. The study concludes that extension training is important for promoting farmers’ adoption of improved irrigation maintenance practices and ensuring the effective management of irrigation facilities. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies provide regular practical training, field demonstrations, and technical advisory services on irrigation maintenance. Farmers should also be encouraged to participate actively in extension programmes and improve their access to maintenance tools, spare parts, technical support, and appropriate irrigation management facilities.
