Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Improved Water Pump Maintenance

Abstract

Water pumps are important farm equipment used to provide water for irrigation, livestock production, and other agricultural activities. Proper maintenance of water pumps can improve their operational efficiency, reduce breakdowns, extend equipment lifespan, and minimize interruptions to farm activities. Extension training can provide farmers with practical knowledge and skills required to maintain water pumps appropriately and ensure their effective use in agricultural production. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of improved water pump maintenance practices. The study will assess the extent to which farmers adopt recommended maintenance practices and determine how exposure to extension training influences their knowledge and maintenance behaviour. It will also identify the major areas of water pump maintenance in which farmers require additional training and technical guidance. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of regular inspection, cleaning of pump components, lubrication, checking of pipes and connections, maintenance of filters, monitoring of fuel or power systems, replacement of worn components, detection of abnormal pump performance, proper storage, and timely servicing. It will also consider farmers’ exposure to practical demonstrations, farm visits, workshops, group training, and other extension activities relating to farm machinery maintenance. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their exposure to extension training and adoption of improved water pump maintenance practices. The collected data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analyses will be used to examine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of recommended water pump maintenance practices. The study is expected to reveal differences in farmers’ adoption of improved water pump maintenance practices based on their exposure to extension training. Farmers who receive regular practical training, demonstrations, and technical advisory services may demonstrate greater adoption of preventive maintenance practices than farmers with limited training. The study may also identify challenges such as inadequate technical knowledge, limited access to spare parts, maintenance costs, poor availability of skilled technicians, and irregular servicing. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, irrigation farmers, agricultural development agencies, farm machinery technicians, farmers’ associations, policymakers, equipment suppliers, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote proper maintenance of agricultural water pumps and improve the efficiency and sustainability of irrigation activities. The study concludes that extension training can contribute to improved adoption of water pump maintenance practices among farmers. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen practical training through demonstrations, farm visits, maintenance workshops, and instructional materials on water pump servicing and preventive maintenance. Farmers should also be encouraged to conduct regular inspections, carry out timely maintenance, use appropriate replacement parts, and seek technical assistance when necessary to improve pump performance and reduce equipment breakdowns.
