Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Mushroom Hygiene Practices

Abstract

Mushroom hygiene practices involve the measures taken to maintain clean production environments, equipment, substrates, growing facilities, and harvested mushrooms in order to prevent contamination and protect product quality. Proper hygiene is important in mushroom production because contamination by microorganisms, pests, and other harmful agents can reduce yield, affect mushroom quality, and cause economic losses to farmers. Extension training can provide farmers with the knowledge and practical skills required to adopt appropriate hygiene practices throughout the mushroom production process. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of mushroom hygiene practices. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training on mushroom hygiene and determine how such training influences their adoption of recommended hygiene practices. It will also examine the extent to which farmers apply knowledge and skills gained through extension training in maintaining hygienic mushroom production environments. The study will focus on extension training, farmers’ knowledge of mushroom hygiene, cleanliness of production facilities, personal hygiene, equipment sanitation, substrate handling, water quality, waste disposal, prevention of contamination, pest control, harvesting hygiene, and storage hygiene. It will also consider farmers’ participation in practical demonstrations, advisory activities, and other extension programmes designed to improve hygiene and contamination control in mushroom production. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected mushroom farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension training and adoption of mushroom hygiene practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of recommended mushroom hygiene practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension training may have a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of mushroom hygiene practices. Farmers who receive regular and practical training may demonstrate greater adoption of appropriate facility cleaning, equipment sanitation, personal hygiene, substrate handling, waste disposal, contamination prevention, and harvesting hygiene practices. The study may also reveal that inadequate training, limited access to extension personnel, insufficient sanitation materials, and poor production facilities can constrain farmers’ adoption of recommended hygiene practices. The study will be useful to mushroom farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, food safety organizations, agribusiness practitioners, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information on the contribution of extension training to improved hygiene and contamination management in mushroom production. The findings may also assist relevant agencies in developing practical training programmes that strengthen farmers’ knowledge and skills for maintaining hygienic production environments and improving mushroom quality. The study concludes that extension training is an important component of promoting farmers’ adoption of mushroom hygiene practices because practical education can improve farmers’ knowledge and application of appropriate sanitation and contamination-control measures. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular training, demonstrations, and advisory services on production facility sanitation, equipment cleaning, personal hygiene, substrate handling, waste management, contamination prevention, harvesting, and storage hygiene to support safe, productive, and sustainable mushroom production.
