Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Peer-to-Peer Farm Advisory Practices

Abstract

Peer-to-peer farm advisory practices provide opportunities for farmers to exchange agricultural knowledge, experiences, production techniques, and practical solutions with one another. Such approaches can complement conventional agricultural extension services by allowing farmers to learn from individuals with relevant local farming experience. Extension training can strengthen farmers’ ability to provide and receive useful farm advice, improve information sharing, and encourage the adoption of appropriate agricultural practices. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of peer-to-peer farm advisory practices. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training, determine their knowledge of peer-based advisory approaches, and examine the extent to which training influences their participation in farmer-to-farmer information exchange. It will also assess the frequency of peer advisory interactions and the types of agricultural information shared among participating farmers. The study will focus on extension training, peer-to-peer farm advisory practices, farmer knowledge, farmer-to-farmer communication, agricultural information sharing, peer learning, advisory participation, practical experience exchange, demonstration activities, problem-solving, agricultural innovation, and adoption of peer advisory practices. Information will be obtained from farmers to determine their level of exposure to extension training and their participation in peer-based advisory activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of peer-to-peer farm advisory practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension training may improve farmers’ knowledge and participation in peer-to-peer farm advisory practices. Farmers who receive appropriate training may demonstrate greater willingness and ability to share production information, provide practical advice, participate in farmer learning activities, and exchange solutions to common agricultural challenges. The study may also indicate that practical training and regular extension support contribute to more effective farmer-to-farmer advisory activities. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, farmer organizations, cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, researchers, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for designing extension programmes that combine professional advisory services with farmer-to-farmer learning approaches. The findings may also assist extension personnel in identifying effective ways of strengthening local knowledge exchange and farmer participation in agricultural information dissemination. The study concludes that extension training can contribute to farmers’ adoption of peer-to-peer farm advisory practices by improving their knowledge, communication skills, and capacity to exchange agricultural information. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies incorporate structured peer-learning activities, farmer demonstrations, experience-sharing sessions, and follow-up support into extension programmes. Such approaches may strengthen farmer participation in agricultural information exchange and improve access to practical farm advisory support.
