Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Produce Supply Agreements

Abstract

Produce supply agreements are arrangements between farmers and buyers that specify conditions for the supply and purchase of agricultural products. Such agreements may cover product quantity, quality standards, prices, delivery schedules, payment terms, and other conditions governing the supply relationship. Effective supply agreements can provide farmers with more organised market opportunities, improve planning, and strengthen relationships with buyers. Extension training can equip farmers with knowledge and skills needed to understand, negotiate, and comply with produce supply agreements. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of produce supply agreements. It will assess how extension training influences farmers’ knowledge and use of formal or structured agreements for supplying agricultural produce to buyers. The study will also determine the extent to which farmers adopt supply agreement practices and identify areas where extension training contributes to improved understanding of contractual supply arrangements. The study will focus on extension training, supply agreements, buyer identification, quantity specifications, product quality requirements, pricing arrangements, delivery schedules, payment terms, contract understanding, negotiation practices, record keeping, and compliance with buyer requirements. It will also examine farmers’ exposure to training on agricultural marketing and business management and the extent to which such training supports their participation in organised produce supply arrangements. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to extension training and their adoption of produce supply agreement practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of produce supply agreements. The study is expected to reveal that extension training may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of produce supply agreements. Farmers who receive relevant training may demonstrate greater understanding and use of agreements covering product quantity, quality, pricing, delivery, and payment conditions. The findings may also indicate that practical training improves farmers’ ability to evaluate supply terms, maintain appropriate records, communicate with buyers, and meet agreed produce requirements. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural cooperatives, institutional buyers, agribusiness organisations, government agricultural agencies, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that address agricultural marketing, contract arrangements, and farm business management. The findings may also assist farmers in developing more organised relationships with buyers, improving market access, reducing misunderstandings, and creating more predictable marketing arrangements. The study concludes that extension training can contribute to improving farmers’ adoption of produce supply agreements and strengthening their participation in organised agricultural markets. It is therefore recommended that extension programmes provide practical training on supply agreement terms, negotiation, quality requirements, pricing, delivery schedules, payment conditions, record keeping, and contract compliance. Extension agents should also provide continuous advisory support to help farmers understand and manage supply agreements effectively.
