Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Water-Efficient Crop Management

Abstract

Water-efficient crop management involves the use of agricultural practices that reduce unnecessary water use while maintaining suitable crop growth and productivity. Such practices are important for improving water-use efficiency, reducing pressure on available water resources, and supporting sustainable crop production, particularly in areas experiencing irregular rainfall or limited irrigation water. Extension training can provide farmers with practical knowledge and skills on appropriate crop management practices that promote efficient use of available water. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of water-efficient crop management. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training on water-efficient practices and determine how such training influences their adoption of recommended crop management techniques. It will also examine the role of extension education in improving farmers’ understanding of efficient water use throughout different stages of crop production. The study will focus on extension training, farmers’ knowledge of water-efficient crop management, irrigation scheduling, appropriate planting methods, soil moisture conservation, mulching, crop spacing, timely weeding, selection of suitable crop varieties, water-saving field practices, and efficient application of irrigation water. It will also consider farmers’ participation in practical demonstrations and other extension activities designed to improve water management during crop production. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension training and adoption of water-efficient crop management practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of water-efficient crop management practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension training may have a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of water-efficient crop management practices. Farmers who receive regular and practical training may demonstrate greater awareness and application of appropriate water-saving techniques, including improved irrigation scheduling, soil moisture conservation, mulching, suitable crop spacing, and efficient water application. The study may also reveal that inadequate training, limited access to extension personnel, insufficient irrigation facilities, and lack of appropriate farm resources can constrain the adoption of water-efficient practices. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, irrigation authorities, agricultural development agencies, water-resource management organizations, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information on the role of extension training in promoting efficient agricultural water management. The findings may also assist relevant agencies in designing practical training programmes that equip farmers with appropriate knowledge and skills for reducing water losses while maintaining productive crop management. The study concludes that extension training is an important consideration in promoting farmers’ adoption of water-efficient crop management because practical education can improve farmers’ knowledge and application of appropriate water-saving practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular training, demonstrations, and advisory services on efficient irrigation scheduling, soil moisture conservation, mulching, crop management, and other water-saving techniques to promote sustainable crop production and efficient use of agricultural water resources.
