Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Knowledge of Farm-Based Enterprise Development

Abstract

Farm-based enterprise development involves the establishment and management of agricultural businesses that generate income from farming activities and related products and services. These enterprises may include crop production, livestock production, processing, storage, marketing, value addition, and other agricultural business activities. Farmers’ knowledge of enterprise development is important for identifying viable opportunities, planning farm businesses, managing resources, and making informed decisions that can improve the economic performance of farming activities. Extension training can provide farmers with relevant technical, managerial, and business knowledge required for developing successful farm-based enterprises. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ knowledge of farm-based enterprise development. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training and determine their level of knowledge regarding the identification, planning, establishment, and management of farm-based enterprises. The study will also examine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ knowledge of farm enterprise development practices. The study will focus on extension training in enterprise identification, business planning, farm budgeting, resource management, production planning, value addition, marketing, record keeping, financial management, risk management, and enterprise diversification. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of identifying profitable agricultural opportunities, assessing market demand, estimating production costs, managing farm income, and developing sustainable farm-based businesses. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension training and knowledge of farm-based enterprise development. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while knowledge indices, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be used to determine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ knowledge of farm-based enterprise development. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive regular and relevant extension training may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge of farm-based enterprise development. Training in business planning, budgeting, marketing, record keeping, value addition, and financial management may improve farmers’ ability to identify and manage viable agricultural enterprises. However, inadequate training opportunities, limited access to extension services, insufficient business information, lack of financial knowledge, poor market access, and limited exposure to successful farm enterprises may constrain farmers’ knowledge. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural researchers, government agencies, non-governmental organisations, financial institutions, agribusiness organisations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information on the contribution of extension training to farmers’ knowledge of farm-based enterprise development and identify areas where enterprise-oriented extension support can be strengthened. The findings may also assist extension organisations in developing practical training programmes that promote agricultural entrepreneurship and income diversification. The study concludes that extension training can contribute to improved farmers’ knowledge of farm-based enterprise development by providing relevant technical, managerial, financial, and marketing information. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen enterprise-focused training through practical business planning sessions, farm budgeting exercises, market-oriented demonstrations, record-keeping education, financial management training, and linkages with relevant agricultural and financial institutions.
