Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Knowledge of Farm Layout Planning

Abstract

Farm layout planning is an important aspect of farm management because it involves the systematic arrangement of farm structures, crop fields, access roads, irrigation facilities, drainage systems, storage areas, livestock units, and other farm resources. Proper farm layout can improve the efficient use of land, labour, water, machinery, and other production resources. However, inadequate knowledge of farm layout planning may result in inefficient land use, poor accessibility, unnecessary movement, and difficulties in managing farm operations. Extension training can provide farmers with practical knowledge and skills needed to understand and apply appropriate farm layout planning principles. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ knowledge of farm layout planning. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training and determine their level of knowledge of recommended farm layout planning practices. The study will also examine the relationship between participation in extension training and farmers’ knowledge of farm layout planning. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of farm site assessment, land-use planning, field arrangement, crop allocation, farm road placement, irrigation and drainage layout, location of storage facilities, livestock unit arrangement, farm boundary planning, water-source placement, waste management areas, and accessibility of different farm units. It will also consider farmers’ participation in training programmes, practical demonstrations, advisory visits, extension meetings, and access to technical information on farm planning and resource management. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension training and knowledge of farm layout planning practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, knowledge-level assessment, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of extension training on farmers’ knowledge of farm layout planning. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive regular and practical extension training may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge of farm layout planning. Training, field demonstrations, illustrations, and advisory support may improve farmers’ understanding of land-use arrangement, farm accessibility, drainage, irrigation, field organisation, and placement of farm facilities. The study may also identify challenges such as inadequate extension contact, limited training opportunities, lack of technical planning skills, and insufficient access to farm planning information. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, farm management specialists, research institutions, policymakers, non-governmental organisations, and other stakeholders involved in agricultural development. It may provide useful information for identifying farmers’ knowledge gaps in farm layout planning and improving the delivery of practical extension training. The findings may also assist extension organisations in developing farmer-oriented training programmes that promote efficient farm organisation and resource use. The study concludes that extension training is important for improving farmers’ knowledge of farm layout planning and promoting efficient organisation of farm resources. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen practical training, field demonstrations, farm planning exercises, and advisory visits on appropriate farm layout principles. Farmers should also be encouraged to participate in extension programmes and apply appropriate planning techniques to improve land utilisation, farm accessibility, resource management, and overall farm productivity.
