Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Knowledge of Minimum Tillage Techniques

Abstract

Minimum tillage is a soil management practice that involves reducing the amount and intensity of soil disturbance during land preparation and crop production. The practice can help conserve soil moisture, reduce soil erosion, maintain soil structure, minimise excessive fuel and labour use, and support sustainable agricultural production. Effective application of minimum tillage requires farmers to understand appropriate land preparation methods, residue management, planting techniques, weed control, and the proper use of suitable farm equipment. Extension training can provide farmers with the technical information and practical skills needed to improve their knowledge of minimum tillage techniques. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ knowledge of minimum tillage techniques. The study will assess farmers’ existing knowledge of minimum tillage and determine the extent to which exposure to extension training contributes to their understanding of recommended techniques. It will also examine farmers’ participation in extension training programmes, frequency of training, and the major sources of information through which farmers obtain knowledge about minimum tillage. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of reduced soil disturbance, appropriate land preparation, residue retention, soil cover, planting methods, weed management, moisture conservation, use of appropriate tillage equipment, timing of field operations, and maintenance of soil structure under minimum tillage systems. Attention will also be given to practical extension training methods such as field demonstrations, farm visits, farmer meetings, field days, farmer field schools, and hands-on training activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their knowledge of minimum tillage techniques and their exposure to extension training. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ knowledge of minimum tillage techniques. The study is expected to reveal differences in farmers’ knowledge of minimum tillage techniques based on their level of exposure to extension training. Farmers who participate in practical demonstrations, field training, farm visits, and other extension activities may demonstrate better knowledge of recommended minimum tillage practices. The study may also identify knowledge gaps relating to soil disturbance, residue management, weed control, moisture conservation, equipment use, and timing of operations. Constraints such as inadequate training opportunities, limited extension contact, high cost of suitable equipment, labour requirements, and insufficient technical information may also be identified. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, farmer associations, environmental organisations, government institutions, researchers, and policymakers. The findings may assist in developing practical extension training programmes that improve farmers’ knowledge of minimum tillage and promote sustainable soil management. Improved knowledge may contribute to better soil moisture conservation, reduced erosion, improved soil structure, lower production costs, more efficient farm operations, and sustainable crop productivity. The study concludes that extension training is an important means of improving farmers’ knowledge of minimum tillage techniques by providing relevant technical information and practical skills. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen minimum tillage education through field demonstrations, hands-on training, farm visits, farmer field schools, field days, and regular advisory services. Farmers should also be supported with appropriate minimum tillage equipment, locally relevant technical information, and practical demonstrations to improve their understanding and application of minimum tillage techniques.
