Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Knowledge of Quality Declared Seed Production

Abstract

Quality declared seed production is an important aspect of agricultural production because it provides farmers with reliable planting materials that meet established standards of varietal identity, purity, germination, and quality. Farmers’ knowledge of appropriate seed production practices is essential for maintaining seed quality and ensuring the availability of suitable planting materials. Extension training can provide farmers with the technical information and practical skills required for producing quality declared seeds and maintaining recommended production standards. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ knowledge of quality declared seed production. It will assess farmers’ level of knowledge before and after exposure to extension training and determine the extent to which training contributes to their understanding of recommended seed production practices. The study will also examine the relationship between farmers’ exposure to extension training and their knowledge of quality declared seed production. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of seed selection, land preparation, varietal identification, isolation requirements, planting procedures, crop management, rouging, pest and disease control, harvesting, drying, cleaning, grading, storage, packaging, and seed quality maintenance. Attention will also be given to extension training methods such as practical demonstrations, farm visits, workshops, field days, farmer group training, and distribution of technical information. These activities may improve farmers’ understanding of the procedures required for producing and maintaining quality declared seeds. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and knowledge assessment instruments. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while knowledge scores, correlation analysis, regression analysis, and appropriate tests of differences will be used to examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ knowledge of quality declared seed production. The study is expected to reveal that farmers exposed to extension training may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge of quality declared seed production than farmers with limited exposure to training. Training may improve farmers’ understanding of seed selection, field standards, rouging, harvesting, processing, storage, and quality control procedures. However, inadequate training frequency, limited access to extension agents, insufficient practical demonstrations, and poor availability of technical materials may constrain farmers’ ability to acquire and apply the required knowledge. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, seed producers, seed certification organizations, agricultural development agencies, researchers, government institutions, and agricultural development programmes. It may provide useful information on the contribution of extension training to farmers’ knowledge of quality seed production and identify areas where additional training and technical support are required. The findings may also assist agricultural agencies in improving farmer-oriented seed production training programmes. The study concludes that extension training is an important source of technical knowledge for improving farmers’ understanding of quality declared seed production. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen practical training programmes, organize regular field demonstrations, provide accessible technical materials, and improve extension contact with seed-producing farmers. Training should emphasize recommended seed production, processing, storage, and quality maintenance practices to support the production of reliable planting materials and improved agricultural productivity.
