Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Use of Neem-Based Pest Management

Abstract

Neem-based pest management is an environmentally oriented agricultural practice that involves the use of neem leaves, seeds, extracts, oils, or other neem-based preparations to control or reduce crop pests. Neem contains natural compounds with insecticidal, repellent, and growth-regulating properties that can support crop protection when appropriately prepared and applied. Extension training can provide farmers with the knowledge and practical skills required to identify suitable neem materials, prepare neem-based products, and apply them effectively for pest management. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ use of neem-based pest management. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training and determine how training influences their knowledge and use of recommended neem-based pest management practices. The study will also examine the extent to which farmers apply the knowledge and skills acquired through extension training in managing crop pests. The study will focus on farmers’ use of neem leaves, seeds, oils, and extracts for pest control, including methods of collection, preparation, dilution, application, storage, and handling. Attention will also be given to pest identification, appropriate application timing, frequency of treatment, dosage, crop compatibility, and safety precautions. Extension training methods such as practical demonstrations, farm visits, farmer group meetings, field days, workshops, and distribution of technical information will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and adoption assessment instruments. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while adoption and utilization scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be used to determine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ use of neem-based pest management. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive regular extension training may demonstrate greater use of neem-based pest management practices. Training may improve farmers’ knowledge of neem preparation, appropriate dosage, application methods, pest identification, and treatment timing. However, inadequate extension contact, limited practical demonstrations, difficulties in preparing standardized neem formulations, limited access to neem materials, and farmers’ preference for synthetic pesticides may constrain effective use. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, crop protection specialists, agricultural development agencies, researchers, government institutions, and non-governmental organizations. It may provide useful information on the contribution of extension training to farmers’ use of neem-based pest management and identify challenges affecting the adoption of plant-based pest control practices. The findings may also assist agricultural agencies in designing practical training programmes that promote appropriate, affordable, and environmentally responsible pest management. The study concludes that extension training can play an important role in improving farmers’ use of neem-based pest management practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen practical training and field demonstrations on neem collection, preparation, dosage, application, and safety procedures. Farmers should also be provided with reliable technical information on pest identification and appropriate treatment timing to improve pest management, reduce unnecessary dependence on synthetic pesticides, and support sustainable crop production.
