Effect of Extension Training on Fish Farmers’ Knowledge of Water Quality Management
Abstract
Water quality management is an important aspect of successful fish farming because the condition of water directly affects fish growth, health, survival, feeding efficiency, and overall production. Poor water quality can result from inadequate management of temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, ammonia, turbidity, and other water parameters, potentially causing stress, disease outbreaks, slow growth, and fish mortality. Extension training can provide fish farmers with relevant knowledge and practical skills for monitoring and maintaining suitable water quality conditions. This study will examine the effect of extension training on fish farmers’ knowledge of water quality management. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training and determine the extent to which such training influences their knowledge of recommended water quality management practices. The study will also identify the major sources of water quality information available to fish farmers and examine the challenges affecting their access to relevant technical training. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of important water quality parameters such as temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, ammonia, nitrite, turbidity, and water transparency. It will also consider knowledge of water testing, aeration, water exchange, pond cleaning, waste management, stocking density, feed management, and appropriate responses to changes in water quality. The study will further examine farmers’ participation in extension training, practical demonstrations, frequency of extension contact, and access to water quality monitoring tools and technical information. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from fish farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their exposure to extension training and knowledge of water quality management. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, knowledge-level assessment, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ knowledge of water quality management. The study is expected to reveal that fish farmers who receive regular and relevant extension training may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge of water quality management. Training and practical demonstrations may improve farmers’ understanding of water quality parameters, testing procedures, aeration, water exchange, waste management, and appropriate corrective measures. However, limited access to water testing equipment, high costs of monitoring tools, inadequate extension contact, insufficient technical information, and poor access to training facilities may remain challenges affecting farmers’ knowledge. The study will be useful to fish farmers, agricultural extension agents, aquaculture specialists, farmer organisations, agricultural development agencies, policymakers, non-governmental organisations, fish feed and equipment suppliers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension training programmes on water quality management and improving farmers’ technical capacity in aquaculture. The findings may also support efforts to reduce fish mortality, improve fish growth and health, maintain suitable production conditions, and increase the efficiency and profitability of fish farming. The study concludes that extension training is important for improving fish farmers’ knowledge of water quality management and supporting effective aquaculture production. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies provide regular practical training, demonstrations, and advisory services on water quality monitoring and management. Fish farmers should also be encouraged to participate actively in extension programmes and improve their access to appropriate water testing equipment and technical information for effective water quality management.
