Effect of Extension Training on Livestock Farmers’ Adoption of Animal Movement Control Measures

Abstract

Animal movement control is an important livestock disease prevention measure because the movement of animals between farms, markets, communities, and production areas can contribute to the spread of infectious diseases. Appropriate control measures can help farmers reduce disease transmission, protect healthy animals, and minimize economic losses associated with livestock diseases. Extension training can provide livestock farmers with the knowledge and practical skills required to understand and adopt appropriate animal movement control measures. This study will examine the effect of extension training on livestock farmers’ adoption of animal movement control measures. The study will assess farmers’ adoption of recommended movement control practices and determine the extent to which extension training contributes to improved adoption. It will also examine farmers’ exposure to extension education and identify areas where additional training is required to strengthen livestock movement management. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of measures such as controlling the movement of newly introduced animals, observing quarantine requirements, maintaining animal movement records, restricting contact with animals from unknown health backgrounds, separating sick animals, disinfecting vehicles and equipment, complying with livestock movement regulations, and seeking veterinary clearance where required. It will also consider farmers’ participation in extension training programmes, demonstrations, farm visits, and livestock health education activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from livestock farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their exposure to extension training and adoption of animal movement control measures. The collected data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analyses will be used to examine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of animal movement control measures. The study is expected to reveal differences in the adoption of animal movement control measures among livestock farmers based on their exposure to extension training. Farmers who participate in regular training, demonstrations, farm visits, and animal health education may demonstrate greater adoption of movement control practices. The study may also identify challenges such as limited access to veterinary services, inadequate knowledge of movement regulations, costs associated with movement control, weak monitoring systems, and limited availability of appropriate animal identification and record-keeping facilities. The study will be useful to livestock farmers, agricultural extension agents, veterinarians, livestock development agencies, animal health authorities, farmers’ associations, policymakers, researchers, and organisations involved in livestock disease prevention. The findings may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote responsible animal movement and improve farmers’ capacity to prevent the spread of livestock diseases. The study concludes that extension training can contribute to improved adoption of animal movement control measures among livestock farmers. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension and veterinary agencies strengthen training through practical demonstrations, farm visits, workshops, and accessible animal health information on movement control and disease prevention. Livestock farmers should also be encouraged to maintain accurate movement records, comply with relevant requirements, isolate newly introduced animals where necessary, and seek veterinary guidance to support effective disease control.
