Effect of Farmers’ Participation in Extension Programme Planning on Adoption of Recommended Practices

Abstract

Farmers’ participation in extension programme planning is an important approach that allows farmers to contribute their experiences, needs, priorities, and local knowledge to the design of agricultural extension activities. When farmers are involved in identifying problems and determining the type of advisory support they require, extension programmes may become more relevant to their farming conditions. Effective participation can also strengthen farmers’ sense of ownership and improve their willingness to consider and apply recommended agricultural practices. This study will examine the effect of farmers’ participation in extension programme planning on the adoption of recommended practices. The study will assess the extent of farmers’ participation in planning extension programmes, determine their level of adoption of recommended agricultural practices, and examine the influence of participatory programme planning on farmers’ adoption decisions. It will also identify factors that may encourage or constrain farmers’ participation in extension planning activities. The study will focus on farmers’ involvement in needs assessment, problem identification, priority setting, selection of extension topics, planning of training activities, scheduling of demonstrations, selection of communication methods, and evaluation of extension programmes. It will also examine adoption of recommended practices relating to improved crop production, soil management, input use, pest management, water conservation, farm record keeping, and other relevant agricultural activities. Farmers’ opportunities to express opinions, contribute local knowledge, and provide feedback during programme planning will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their participation in extension programme planning and adoption of recommended agricultural practices. The data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between farmers’ participation in extension programme planning and adoption of recommended practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who participate more actively in extension programme planning may demonstrate higher levels of adoption of recommended agricultural practices. Participation may improve the relevance of extension messages, increase farmers’ understanding of recommended practices, strengthen ownership of extension activities, and encourage greater willingness to apply new practices. However, limited opportunities for participation, inadequate communication, low awareness of planning processes, time constraints, and weak consideration of farmers’ suggestions may reduce the benefits of participatory programme planning. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, extension management authorities, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ associations, rural development organisations, policymakers, and agricultural researchers. The findings may provide useful information for strengthening farmer-centred extension systems and improving the design of programmes that reflect farmers’ needs, priorities, experiences, and production conditions. The study concludes that farmers’ participation in extension programme planning can contribute to the relevance and effective delivery of agricultural advisory programmes and may support the adoption of recommended practices. It is therefore recommended that extension organisations provide farmers with meaningful opportunities to participate in needs assessment, priority setting, programme design, implementation planning, and evaluation. Extension agents should also strengthen consultation, feedback, and collaborative planning with farmers to improve ownership and encourage the application of recommended agricultural practices.
