Assessment of Students’ Knowledge of Anatomical Basis of Postnatal Growth
Abstract
The study assesses students’ knowledge of the anatomical basis of postnatal growth, with emphasis on the structural changes that occur in the human body after birth. Postnatal growth involves changes in the size, shape, proportions, and organization of tissues, organs, and body regions as an individual progresses from infancy through childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Knowledge of the anatomical basis of these changes is important for understanding normal human development and recognizing structural variations that occur at different stages of life. The study will assess students’ knowledge of the major anatomical structures and growth-related changes associated with postnatal development. Specific objectives will include assessing knowledge of changes in the skeletal system, growth of the skull and facial structures, development of the vertebral column, changes in body proportions, and structural changes in major organs and tissues. The study will also determine students’ understanding of how anatomical growth varies across different postnatal stages and how these changes contribute to the development of the adult body. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, and data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and, where applicable, image-based or practical identification of anatomical structures at different stages of postnatal development. The assessment will cover age-related structural changes, anatomical proportions, growth patterns, and developmental relationships among selected body structures. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among the students regarding the anatomical basis of postnatal growth. Students may demonstrate better knowledge of general growth changes and major skeletal structures, while more detailed changes involving craniofacial development, vertebral growth, body proportions, and age-related structural relationships may present greater difficulties. Differences in knowledge may also be observed according to students’ level of study and exposure to developmental and practical anatomy learning. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, paediatricians, physiotherapists, dentists, orthodontists, radiologists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment of human growth and development. The study may identify areas of developmental anatomy that require greater emphasis during theoretical and practical teaching and may support the use of anatomical models, developmental images, specimens, and other visual learning resources to improve students’ understanding of postnatal anatomical changes. The study will conclude by documenting students’ knowledge of the anatomical basis of postnatal growth and identifying areas of strength and difficulty in their understanding of developmental anatomy. It is recommended that age-related anatomical illustrations, developmental specimens, models, and practical demonstrations be incorporated into anatomy teaching to improve students’ understanding of structural changes occurring after birth. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should also be conducted to provide broader information on students’ knowledge of the anatomical basis of postnatal growth.
