Assessment of Students’ Knowledge of Proper Handling of Anatomical Specimens
Abstract
The study examines students’ knowledge of the proper handling of anatomical specimens, with emphasis on the appropriate practices required for the safe, respectful, and effective use of specimens during anatomy education. Proper handling of anatomical specimens is important for preserving their structural condition, reducing the risk of damage or contamination, and maintaining a safe practical learning environment. Adequate knowledge of specimen handling is therefore relevant to students’ practical competence, laboratory safety, and ethical conduct during anatomy training. The study will assess students’ knowledge of proper anatomical specimen handling and determine their understanding of appropriate procedures before, during, and after practical anatomy sessions. The specific objectives will include assessing knowledge of specimen identification, lifting and positioning techniques, appropriate use of handling instruments, prevention of specimen damage, hygiene and infection-control practices, storage procedures, and ethical considerations involved in the handling of human anatomical materials. The study will also identify areas of specimen handling where students demonstrate limited knowledge. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students with relevant practical anatomy experience will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and, where applicable, standardized observation or practical assessment of specimen-handling procedures. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical tests will be applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge of proper anatomical specimen handling among the students. Students may demonstrate stronger knowledge of basic handling and hygiene practices, while more specific procedures involving fragile specimens, appropriate positioning, instrument use, storage, and prevention of structural damage may present greater difficulty. Differences may also be observed in students’ understanding of the ethical responsibilities associated with respectful handling and appropriate treatment of human anatomical specimens. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, laboratory managers, dissection instructors, and other professionals involved in practical anatomy education. The study may provide useful information for identifying gaps in students’ knowledge and improving training on specimen handling, laboratory safety, hygiene, preservation, and ethical conduct. Improved knowledge of proper handling procedures may also contribute to the preservation of anatomical specimens and promote a safer and more respectful practical learning environment. The study will conclude by documenting students’ knowledge of proper handling of anatomical specimens and identifying areas requiring further attention during practical anatomy training. It is recommended that students should receive clear and structured instruction on specimen handling before participating in practical anatomy activities, with emphasis on safety, preservation, hygiene, and ethical responsibilities. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should also be conducted to provide broader information on proper anatomical specimen handling practices in anatomy education.
