Bilateral Asymmetry of Forearm Segment Lengths Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines bilateral asymmetry of forearm segment lengths among undergraduate students. The forearm is an important segment of the upper limb that contributes to positioning the hand, performing movements, and maintaining functional coordination. Differences in forearm segment dimensions between the right and left sides may represent normal anatomical variation and provide useful information on upper limb symmetry. The study will assess and compare forearm segment lengths on the right and left sides among undergraduate students. Specific measurements will be obtained using standardized anatomical landmarks to determine the dimensions of corresponding forearm segments. The study will also determine the magnitude and pattern of bilateral differences in the measured forearm lengths. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who meet the eligibility criteria will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Forearm segment lengths on both sides will be measured using suitable anthropometric instruments and standardized procedures. The collected data will be analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate paired statistical technique will be used to compare measurements obtained from the right and left sides. The study is expected to reveal the pattern and extent of bilateral asymmetry in forearm segment lengths among the participants. It is also expected to determine whether significant differences exist between corresponding measurements of the right and left forearms. The findings will provide useful anthropometric information on upper limb symmetry and normal variation among undergraduate students. The findings are expected to be useful to anatomists, anthropologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, orthopaedic practitioners, ergonomists, and forensic practitioners. The information may contribute to anthropometric reference data and support research involving upper limb proportions, functional assessment, rehabilitation, ergonomic design, and forensic identification. The study will conclude by describing the observed pattern of bilateral asymmetry in forearm segment lengths among undergraduate students. It is recommended that similar investigations be conducted among larger and more diverse populations to establish broader reference values and improve understanding of normal bilateral variation in upper limb dimensions.
