Effect of Practical Embalming Training on Students’ Knowledge of Preservation Procedures
Abstract
The study examines the effect of practical embalming training on students’ knowledge of preservation procedures. Knowledge of cadaver preservation is important in anatomy education because appropriate preservation supports the safe handling, storage, dissection, and long-term use of human anatomical specimens for teaching and learning. Students may have difficulty understanding preservation procedures when instruction is limited to theoretical descriptions without opportunities to observe or participate in relevant practical activities. Practical embalming training provides students with guided exposure to preservation procedures, materials, equipment, specimen handling, and safety requirements, thereby providing an opportunity to connect theoretical knowledge with practical application. The study will assess students’ baseline knowledge of cadaver preservation procedures and determine the effect of structured practical embalming training on their understanding of the processes involved. The training will cover selected preservation procedures, preparation and handling of cadaveric specimens, appropriate use of preservation materials and equipment, storage requirements, safety precautions, and basic principles underlying effective preservation. Students will receive guided practical instruction under appropriate supervision, with emphasis placed on understanding the purpose, sequence, and safe application of the procedures. A quasi-experimental research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate anatomy students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique and assigned to a practical embalming training group and a comparison group receiving conventional theoretical instruction. The intervention group will participate in structured practical training sessions conducted under appropriate supervision, while both groups will undergo standardized knowledge assessments before and after the instructional period. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests used to determine differences in knowledge between the groups. The study is expected to reveal improved knowledge of preservation procedures among students exposed to practical embalming training. Students may demonstrate better understanding of the sequence and purpose of preservation procedures, specimen preparation, handling requirements, preservation materials, storage conditions, and relevant safety precautions. Practical exposure may also improve students’ ability to relate theoretical concepts to actual preservation processes. However, some aspects involving technical procedures, chemical handling, equipment use, and complex preservation requirements may remain challenging for some students. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, laboratory and mortuary personnel, academic administrators, and students by providing information on the value of practical training in teaching cadaver preservation. The findings may support the inclusion of structured practical embalming activities within anatomy education where appropriate facilities, trained personnel, safety measures, and ethical standards are available. The approach may also strengthen students’ understanding of responsible specimen handling and professional conduct when working with human remains. The study will conclude by determining the effect of practical embalming training on students’ knowledge of preservation procedures. It is recommended that practical embalming training be incorporated into anatomy education where feasible and conducted under the supervision of appropriately trained personnel using suitable facilities, equipment, and safety procedures. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should be conducted to evaluate the long-term effectiveness of practical embalming training in improving knowledge and understanding of cadaver preservation.
