Effect of Ultrasound-Based Teaching on Understanding of Dynamic Human Anatomy
Abstract
The study examines the effect of ultrasound-based teaching on students’ understanding of dynamic human anatomy, with emphasis on the use of real-time ultrasound images to demonstrate anatomical structures and their movement during physiological activities. Unlike static anatomical illustrations, ultrasound allows students to observe changes in the position, shape, and relationships of structures during movement and functional processes. Its use in anatomy education may therefore provide a practical approach for connecting structural anatomy with dynamic anatomical changes. The study will assess students’ understanding of dynamic human anatomy before and after exposure to ultrasound-based teaching. The specific objectives will include determining students’ baseline understanding of selected dynamic anatomical structures, providing structured teaching sessions using appropriate ultrasound images and demonstrations, assessing students’ understanding following the intervention, and comparing their performance before and after exposure to ultrasound-based learning activities. A quasi-experimental research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique and exposed to structured ultrasound-based anatomy teaching. The teaching sessions will involve guided interpretation of real-time ultrasound images, identification of anatomical structures, observation of movement and changes in structural relationships, and correlation of ultrasound findings with anatomical models, diagrams, and relevant theoretical concepts. Data will be collected using standardized anatomy assessments and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal improved understanding of dynamic anatomical structures among students following exposure to ultrasound-based teaching. Students may demonstrate better recognition of anatomical structures, understanding of movement, appreciation of spatial relationships, and ability to relate dynamic images to conventional anatomical representations. Greater difficulty may remain in interpreting unfamiliar ultrasound appearances, distinguishing closely related structures, and understanding structures that are difficult to visualize clearly on ultrasound. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, radiologists, sonographers, medical students, radiography students, physiotherapy students, and other healthcare trainees involved in anatomy and medical imaging education. The study may provide useful information on the educational value of real-time imaging for demonstrating anatomical structures in motion and may assist educators in integrating appropriate ultrasound resources with conventional anatomy teaching methods. The study will conclude by determining the effect of ultrasound-based teaching on students’ understanding of dynamic human anatomy. It is recommended that appropriately supervised ultrasound demonstrations should be incorporated into anatomy education where suitable resources and trained personnel are available, with emphasis on correlating dynamic images with established anatomical knowledge. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should be conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of ultrasound-based approaches across different regions and aspects of dynamic anatomy.
