Morphological Variation of the Spinoglenoid Notch Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The spinoglenoid notch is an important anatomical feature located along the lateral aspect of the scapula, between the spine and the glenoid region. It provides a pathway for structures associated with the suprascapular nerve as it passes from the supraspinous region into the infraspinous region. Variations in the morphology and dimensions of the spinoglenoid notch may influence the anatomical relationship between the notch and surrounding neurovascular structures and may be relevant to conditions affecting the shoulder. The study will therefore investigate the morphological variation of the spinoglenoid notch among undergraduate students. The study will identify and classify the different morphological patterns of the spinoglenoid notch among the participants. It will also determine selected dimensions of the notch, including its width and depth, and establish the frequency and distribution of the observed morphological patterns. The study will further provide descriptive information on the anatomical characteristics of the spinoglenoid notch within the study population. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, and the spinoglenoid notch will be assessed using standardized anatomical landmarks and measurement procedures. Morphological characteristics and relevant dimensions will be obtained through appropriate osteological or imaging-based assessment methods, depending on the study setting and available materials. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary to examine variations in the observed morphological characteristics. The study is expected to reveal different morphological patterns of the spinoglenoid notch among the undergraduate students. Variation may be observed in notch shape, width, depth, and other selected morphometric characteristics. The findings are also expected to provide information on the distribution of these morphological patterns and contribute to a better understanding of anatomical variation in the posterior aspect of the scapula. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anthropologists, radiologists, orthopaedic surgeons, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment of the shoulder region. Knowledge of spinoglenoid notch morphology may assist in understanding the anatomical course of the suprascapular nerve and interpreting imaging findings involving the scapular region. The study may also provide useful reference information for osteological studies and future investigations of scapular anatomy. The study will conclude by describing the morphological characteristics and variation of the spinoglenoid notch among undergraduate students. It is expected to establish the range and distribution of the observed notch patterns and dimensions within the study population. The study will recommend the use of standardized morphometric procedures in future investigations and encourage further studies involving larger and more diverse populations to improve understanding of spinoglenoid notch morphology.
