Morphometric Assessment of the Cricothyroid Muscle Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the morphometric characteristics of the cricothyroid muscle among undergraduate students, with emphasis on selected measurements of its length, width, thickness, and overall dimensions. The cricothyroid muscle is an intrinsic muscle of the larynx that extends from the cricoid cartilage to the thyroid cartilage and plays an important role in adjusting vocal fold tension and contributing to phonation. Knowledge of its morphometric characteristics is important for understanding laryngeal anatomy and may have clinical relevance in voice assessment, laryngeal imaging, airway procedures, and surgical interventions involving the larynx. The study will determine selected morphometric parameters of the cricothyroid muscle among undergraduate students. The specific objectives will include measuring the length, width, and thickness of the muscle, determining the mean values and range of the observed measurements, assessing variations in its dimensions within the study population, and comparing the measurements between the right and left sides where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students or suitable anatomical specimens will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, depending on the assessment method employed. Measurements of the cricothyroid muscle will be obtained using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate imaging-based or dissection procedures where applicable. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential tests will be applied to assess side-related differences and other relevant comparisons. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in the dimensions of the cricothyroid muscle among the undergraduate students studied. Differences may be observed in muscle length, width, and thickness, with some measurements potentially demonstrating variation between the right and left sides. The findings are expected to provide quantitative information on the morphometric characteristics of the cricothyroid muscle and contribute to a better understanding of anatomical variability within the study population. The findings will be useful to anatomists, radiologists, otorhinolaryngologists, laryngologists, head and neck surgeons, speech and voice specialists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of laryngeal structures. It is recommended that standardized anatomical landmarks and measurement procedures be used when assessing the cricothyroid muscle, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader reference values and improve understanding of its anatomical variability.
