Relationship Between Quadriceps Flexibility and Knee Function Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between quadriceps flexibility and knee function among undergraduate students, with emphasis on the functional interaction between the flexibility of the quadriceps muscle group and performance of the knee joint. The quadriceps femoris is a major muscle group of the anterior thigh that contributes significantly to knee extension and lower limb movement. Adequate flexibility of the quadriceps is important for normal joint movement, muscle balance, and functional activities involving the lower limb, making its assessment relevant to the understanding of normal knee function among young adults. The study will assess quadriceps flexibility and knee function among undergraduate students and determine the relationship between both parameters. The specific objectives will include measuring quadriceps flexibility, assessing knee functional performance, comparing the observed measurements between the right and left limbs where applicable, and determining the strength and direction of the relationship between quadriceps flexibility and knee function. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Quadriceps flexibility will be assessed using a standardized flexibility or range-of-motion assessment procedure, while knee function will be evaluated using an appropriate functional assessment method under controlled conditions. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate correlation and inferential statistical tests will be applied to determine the relationship between the assessed variables. The study is expected to reveal measurable variations in quadriceps flexibility and knee function among the participants. An association may be observed between quadriceps flexibility and knee functional performance, with the strength and direction of the relationship varying among individuals. Differences between the right and left limbs may also be observed where applicable, although the findings will describe the observed relationship and will not establish a causal effect. The findings will be useful to anatomists, physiotherapists, sports scientists, orthopaedic practitioners, occupational therapists, and other professionals involved in musculoskeletal and functional assessment. The study may provide useful reference information for understanding the relationship between thigh muscle flexibility and knee function and may support the assessment of lower limb performance, physical activity, rehabilitation, exercise planning, and identification of functional limitations among young adults. The study will conclude by documenting quadriceps flexibility and knee function and determining their observed relationship among undergraduate students. It is recommended that standardized procedures be used when assessing quadriceps flexibility and knee function, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader reference data on lower limb flexibility and functional performance.
