Relationship Between Self-Directed Anatomy Learning and Practical Examination Performance
Abstract
The study examines the relationship between self-directed anatomy learning and students’ performance in practical examinations. Self-directed learning enables students to take greater responsibility for their anatomy education by identifying learning needs, selecting appropriate study resources, organizing revision activities, and evaluating their own understanding. In practical anatomy, such independent learning may provide students with additional opportunities to review anatomical structures, landmarks, relationships, and practical identification skills beyond scheduled classroom and laboratory sessions. The study will assess students’ engagement in self-directed anatomy learning and determine their performance in practical examinations. The specific objectives will include determining the extent to which students engage in self-directed anatomy learning activities, identifying the learning resources and strategies commonly used during independent study, assessing students’ practical examination performance, and examining the relationship between self-directed anatomy learning and practical examination performance. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate anatomy students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire assessing students’ self-directed learning activities, including independent revision, selection of learning materials, use of anatomy models and digital resources, review of difficult structures, and personal study planning. Practical examination performance will be assessed using students’ scores from standardized practical anatomy assessments. Data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical test will be used to determine the relationship between self-directed learning and practical examination performance. The study is expected to reveal variations in students’ engagement in self-directed anatomy learning and practical examination performance. Students who demonstrate greater engagement in organized independent learning activities are expected to show better performance in practical examinations, particularly in the identification of anatomical structures, landmarks, and structural relationships. However, some students may experience difficulties due to inadequate study resources, poor time management, limited practical exposure, or challenges in independently understanding complex anatomical structures. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, medical educators, curriculum planners, and students. The study may provide useful information on the importance of independent learning in supporting practical anatomy education and may help educators identify ways of encouraging students to take greater responsibility for their practical learning. The findings may also contribute to the development of learning strategies that complement formal anatomy teaching and laboratory activities. The study will conclude by determining the relationship between self-directed anatomy learning and practical examination performance. It is recommended that students should be encouraged to develop structured independent learning practices and make effective use of appropriate anatomy learning resources, while educators should provide guidance that supports productive self-directed study. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should be conducted to provide broader evidence on the relationship between self-directed anatomy learning and practical examination outcomes.
