Sexual Dimorphism in Craniofacial Proportions Among Undergraduate Students
Abstract
The study examines sexual dimorphism in craniofacial proportions among undergraduate students. Craniofacial dimensions and proportions exhibit considerable biological variation and may differ between males and females. The assessment of these characteristics provides useful information on normal anatomical variation and may have applications in physical anthropology, forensic identification, clinical anatomy, and related fields. The study will assess selected cranial and facial dimensions among male and female undergraduate students using standardized anatomical landmarks and anthropometric measurement procedures. Measurements may include cranial length, cranial breadth, facial height, facial breadth, and other relevant craniofacial dimensions required for determining proportional relationships. The study will focus on identifying differences in craniofacial proportions between the two sex groups. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who meet the eligibility criteria will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Cranial and facial measurements will be obtained using suitable anthropometric instruments and standardized anatomical landmarks. Derived indices and proportional relationships will be calculated where appropriate, while the data will be analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, together with appropriate independent-group statistical tests to assess differences between male and female participants. The study is expected to reveal measurable differences in selected craniofacial proportions between male and female undergraduate students. Variation may be observed in cranial, facial, and craniofacial indices, with some dimensions showing greater differences than others. The findings are expected to provide reference information on sex-related variation in craniofacial morphology within the study population. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anthropologists, forensic practitioners, orthodontists, maxillofacial professionals, and researchers concerned with craniofacial morphology. The study may contribute to the understanding of normal craniofacial variation and provide baseline anthropometric information that may support forensic assessment, clinical evaluation, and comparative anatomical studies. The study will conclude by documenting the patterns of sexual dimorphism observed in craniofacial proportions among undergraduate students. It will recommend the use of standardized anthropometric landmarks and measurement procedures in future craniofacial studies. Further research involving larger and more diverse populations will also be recommended to establish broader reference data on sex-related craniofacial variation.
