Assessment of Architectural Design Requirements for Mortuary Facilities
Abstract
Mortuary facilities are specialized healthcare and support environments designed for the respectful handling, preservation, identification, examination, and release of human remains. Their architectural requirements differ from those of conventional healthcare facilities because they must accommodate sensitive activities while maintaining hygiene, privacy, security, efficient staff operations, and appropriate separation of functional areas. Careful architectural planning is therefore essential to ensuring that mortuary facilities operate safely, efficiently, and with respect for the dignity of the deceased and their families. This study assesses the architectural design requirements for mortuary facilities, focusing on spatial organization, functional relationships, environmental conditions, circulation, and operational requirements. The assessment considers important spaces such as body receiving areas, storage rooms, preparation areas, autopsy rooms, viewing rooms, identification spaces, family waiting areas, offices, staff facilities, cleaning areas, and service spaces. It examines how the arrangement and connectivity of these spaces influence the overall functionality of mortuary facilities. Particular attention is given to the separation of public, staff, service, and body-handling circulation routes. Appropriate zoning can reduce unnecessary contact between different activities while supporting privacy, infection control, and efficient movement of bodies and personnel. Separate entrances and circulation routes for families, staff, service vehicles, and human remains can help improve operational organization and maintain appropriate levels of dignity and confidentiality. The study further examines environmental requirements, including temperature control, ventilation, lighting, humidity management, drainage, sanitation, and material selection. Mortuary spaces require appropriate environmental conditions for the preservation of bodies and the safe performance of preparation and examination activities. Durable, non-porous, easily cleanable, and moisture-resistant materials can support hygiene and maintenance, while effective ventilation and environmental control systems can improve indoor conditions and reduce potential health risks. Privacy, dignity, accessibility, security, and user experience are also considered important aspects of mortuary design. Viewing and family areas should provide a respectful and comfortable environment, while staff and operational spaces require appropriate levels of security and controlled access. Adequate waiting areas, clear wayfinding, accessible facilities, emergency provisions, and carefully planned transitions between public and restricted spaces can further support the needs of families, healthcare workers, mortuary staff, and other users. The study concludes that successful mortuary facility design requires an integrated approach combining functional planning, environmental control, hygiene, security, privacy, accessibility, and human-centred considerations. Appropriate spatial zoning and circulation can improve operational efficiency while maintaining dignity and respect for the deceased and their families. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, healthcare planners, hospital administrators, mortuary operators, and policymakers involved in the planning, design, and improvement of mortuary facilities.
