Assessment of Architectural Requirements for Women Development Centres
Abstract
Women development centres provide important environments for education, vocational training, entrepreneurship, counselling, healthcare support, social interaction, and community empowerment. The architectural design of these facilities can influence the effectiveness, privacy, safety, comfort, and accessibility of services provided to women from different social and economic backgrounds. Inadequate spatial planning may create conflicts between public and private activities, limit flexibility, and reduce the quality of user experience. This study therefore assesses the architectural requirements necessary for effective women development centres. The study focuses on the spatial and functional requirements of major areas within women development centres, including training rooms, workshops, counselling rooms, meeting spaces, administrative offices, childcare facilities, multipurpose halls, resource centres, reception areas, and recreational spaces. The relationships between these spaces are examined in terms of functional zoning, accessibility, privacy, supervision, and circulation. Particular attention is given to creating an environment that supports both individual development and collective activities. Privacy and security are considered important architectural requirements because many women development centres may provide counselling, health-related support, legal assistance, and other sensitive services. Appropriate zoning can separate confidential activities from public areas while maintaining convenient access to essential facilities. Controlled entrances, reception areas, secure circulation routes, appropriate visibility, emergency exits, and well-designed waiting areas are also considered in relation to user safety and dignity. The study further examines environmental and ergonomic conditions that can contribute to user comfort and effective participation. Natural lighting, ventilation, thermal comfort, acoustics, shading, appropriate furniture, and suitable material selection are considered important elements of the architectural environment. The design of training workshops and vocational spaces is also assessed in relation to equipment requirements, storage, work surfaces, safety, and flexibility for different programmes and activities. Accessibility and inclusivity are additional considerations in the planning of women development centres. Facilities should accommodate women with different physical abilities, age groups, and activity requirements while providing convenient access to toilets, childcare areas, training spaces, and outdoor facilities. Flexible multipurpose spaces, accessible circulation routes, supportive waiting areas, and appropriately designed outdoor spaces can improve the adaptability and usability of the centre. The study also considers the potential integration of childcare facilities to support participation in training and empowerment programmes. The study aims to assess the architectural requirements that contribute to functional efficiency, safety, privacy, accessibility, environmental comfort, and user satisfaction in women development centres. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, planners, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and community development institutions involved in the planning and development of such facilities. By integrating user-centred planning, flexible spaces, secure environments, accessible facilities, and appropriate environmental conditions, women development centres can provide supportive settings for learning, empowerment, entrepreneurship, and community participation.
