Assessment of Coworking Space Design and User Satisfaction
Abstract
Coworking spaces have emerged as flexible work environments that accommodate freelancers, entrepreneurs, remote workers, startups, consultants, and small businesses. Their growing use has increased the need for architectural environments that support productivity, collaboration, comfort, and diverse patterns of work. Unlike conventional offices, coworking spaces must accommodate users with different activities, schedules, privacy requirements, and preferences. This study assesses coworking space design and its relationship with user satisfaction, focusing on how architectural and environmental qualities influence users' experiences of the workplace. The study examines major design components of coworking environments, including workspace configuration, seating arrangements, private offices, shared work areas, meeting rooms, breakout spaces, reception areas, social spaces, and circulation zones. It considers how the organization and relationship of these spaces affect functionality and ease of use. Attention is also given to spatial density, accessibility, flexibility, and the availability of different workspace types that allow users to select environments appropriate to their individual tasks and working preferences. Environmental conditions are examined as important factors influencing user satisfaction within coworking spaces. The study considers natural and artificial lighting, ventilation, thermal comfort, indoor air quality, acoustics, visual privacy, and access to outdoor or biophilic elements. These environmental characteristics can influence users' concentration, comfort, productivity, and perception of the overall quality of the workspace. Appropriate integration of environmental design strategies is therefore considered essential for creating healthy and supportive coworking environments. The research also examines the role of flexibility and social interaction in shaping user satisfaction. Coworking spaces are expected to support both collaborative and individual activities, making adaptable furniture, movable elements, informal meeting areas, and varied workspace settings important design considerations. At the same time, excessive openness, noise, or insufficient privacy may negatively affect users who require concentration. The study therefore considers the need to balance opportunities for interaction with adequate levels of personal space and acoustic control. Additional attention is given to technological infrastructure, accessibility, security, aesthetics, and the overall character of coworking environments. Reliable internet connectivity, convenient power access, appropriate storage, clear wayfinding, and adequate security can influence how effectively users interact with the space. Aesthetic qualities, material selection, colour, furniture design, and interior identity may also contribute to users' perceptions of comfort and belonging. These factors are considered together to provide a broader understanding of the relationship between physical design and user satisfaction. The study aims to assess the architectural and environmental factors that influence satisfaction among users of coworking spaces and to identify design characteristics that support positive workplace experiences. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, interior designers, developers, and facility managers in creating coworking environments that are functional, flexible, comfortable, and responsive to diverse user needs. The study contributes to the development of user-centred coworking spaces that can support productivity, collaboration, wellbeing, and long-term user engagement.
