Assessment of Energy-Efficient Lighting Strategies in Commercial Buildings
Abstract
Lighting is an essential component of commercial buildings because it supports visual tasks, occupant comfort, productivity, safety, and the effective use of interior spaces. However, lighting systems can represent a significant portion of building energy consumption, particularly where artificial lighting is used extensively. The adoption of energy-efficient lighting strategies can reduce electricity demand while maintaining appropriate levels of illumination and visual comfort. Assessing these strategies is therefore important for improving the environmental and operational performance of commercial buildings. This study assesses energy-efficient lighting strategies in commercial buildings, focusing on architectural and technological approaches that can reduce lighting energy consumption. Strategies considered include daylight utilization, energy-efficient light sources, lighting controls, occupancy sensors, daylight sensors, zoning, dimming systems, appropriate fixture selection, and effective lighting layouts. The study also examines how these strategies are incorporated into commercial building design and operation. The study further evaluates the relationship between natural daylight and artificial lighting requirements. Appropriate building orientation, window placement, glazing, skylights, and interior surface reflectance can increase useful daylight within occupied spaces and reduce dependence on artificial illumination during daytime periods. However, daylight strategies must be carefully controlled to prevent excessive glare and unwanted solar heat gain that could increase cooling requirements. Technological and operational strategies are also important in achieving energy-efficient lighting. LED lighting systems, occupancy-based controls, automatic dimming, scheduling, and lighting zoning can reduce unnecessary energy use by adjusting illumination according to occupancy and activity requirements. Proper selection and positioning of lighting fixtures can further improve lighting efficiency by providing adequate illumination while minimizing energy consumption. Despite the potential benefits of energy-efficient lighting, commercial buildings may face challenges including high initial investment, inadequate lighting design, poor maintenance, limited user awareness, inappropriate control settings, and resistance to replacing existing systems. In some cases, excessive lighting levels or continuous operation of unoccupied spaces can undermine energy-saving efforts. Effective implementation therefore requires coordination between architectural design, lighting technology, building management, and occupant behaviour. The study aims to assess energy-efficient lighting strategies used in commercial buildings and identify the architectural, technological, and operational factors that contribute to effective lighting energy conservation. The findings are expected to assist architects, lighting designers, facility managers, developers, and building owners in selecting and implementing appropriate lighting strategies. Ultimately, the study seeks to promote commercial buildings that achieve reduced energy consumption while maintaining adequate illumination, visual comfort, productivity, and overall indoor environmental quality.
