Assessment of Ergonomic Design Features in Office Buildings
Abstract
Ergonomic design is an important consideration in office buildings because it influences employee comfort, health, productivity, and ability to perform workplace activities efficiently. Office workers often spend long periods using desks, chairs, computers, and other equipment, making appropriate ergonomic conditions essential for reducing physical discomfort and work-related strain. Poorly designed workstations and inadequate spatial arrangements may contribute to fatigue, musculoskeletal discomfort, and reduced employee satisfaction. Assessing ergonomic design features is therefore important for creating healthier and more effective office environments. This study assesses ergonomic design features in office buildings by examining the relationship between workplace design and the physical needs of employees. It focuses on workstation dimensions, office furniture, seating arrangements, desk height, computer positioning, circulation space, storage facilities, and spatial clearances. The study considers how these features support comfortable working postures, efficient movement, accessibility, and the performance of routine office tasks. Particular attention is given to the ergonomic quality of workstations and furniture. Adjustable chairs, appropriate desk heights, suitable monitor positioning, adequate legroom, and properly arranged equipment can support healthier working postures and reduce physical strain. The study also examines how workstation spacing, circulation routes, and the arrangement of shared facilities influence employees’ ability to move and work comfortably within office environments. The study further considers environmental and organizational factors that interact with ergonomic design. Adequate lighting, thermal comfort, acoustic conditions, ventilation, and access to natural elements can influence the effectiveness of ergonomic workplace arrangements. The availability of adjustable furniture and flexible workstations may also support employees with different body sizes, physical abilities, and work requirements. These factors are considered in relation to overall workplace comfort and employee experience. Challenges in implementing ergonomic design may include inappropriate furniture selection, limited workspace, fixed workstation dimensions, inadequate circulation, poor equipment positioning, and insufficient awareness of ergonomic principles. Budget limitations and existing building constraints may also affect the ability of organizations to improve workplace ergonomics. Effective ergonomic planning therefore requires consideration of user needs, workplace activities, building layout, furniture design, accessibility, and long-term occupational wellbeing. The study aims to assess the adequacy of ergonomic design features in office buildings and identify factors that support comfortable, safe, and efficient workplace environments. Its findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, interior designers, facility managers, and organizations in improving office design and workstation arrangements. The study can contribute to the development of workplaces that reduce physical strain, support employee wellbeing, improve comfort, and enhance functional performance.
