Assessment of Fence Design and Its Effect on Street Interaction

Abstract

Fence design is an important component of the relationship between private properties and public streets, influencing privacy, security, visibility, accessibility, and opportunities for social interaction. In residential neighbourhoods, fences define property boundaries and provide varying degrees of separation between buildings and street spaces. However, highly opaque, excessively tall, or poorly designed fences may create visual barriers and reduce interaction between residents and pedestrians. Assessing fence design is therefore important for understanding how boundary treatments influence the quality and social character of streets. This study assesses fence design and its effect on street interaction within residential neighbourhoods. It examines factors such as fence height, transparency, materials, gate design, setbacks, landscaping, and the relationship between fences and building entrances. The study considers how different boundary treatments influence visual connectivity, pedestrian experience, social interaction, natural surveillance, and perceptions of security. It also explores how residents balance the need for privacy and security with the desire for openness and connection to the surrounding street environment. The degree of visual permeability provided by a fence can significantly influence interaction between properties and streets. Transparent or partially open fences may allow residents to observe street activities while enabling pedestrians to maintain visual connections with buildings and front yards. Conversely, solid walls can provide greater privacy and physical separation but may reduce visibility and opportunities for informal interaction. The design and positioning of gates, entrances, and pedestrian access points can further influence how residents and street users engage with one another. Fence design can also affect the physical and environmental quality of streets. Appropriately landscaped boundaries may soften the appearance of hard surfaces, provide shade, and create more attractive pedestrian environments. In contrast, continuous high walls can produce visually monotonous streetscapes and may contribute to feelings of enclosure. The relationship between fence height, sidewalk width, vegetation, lighting, and building setbacks is therefore important in creating streets that support both security and social activity. The study further considers the influence of security concerns, cultural preferences, household characteristics, and local development practices on fence design. Residents may prefer more enclosed boundaries because of concerns about privacy, property protection, or perceived insecurity, while more open boundaries may encourage greater visibility and community interaction. An appropriate balance between enclosure and openness is therefore necessary. Fence design should respond to local environmental and social conditions rather than relying on a single boundary treatment for all residential settings. The study aims to evaluate how fence characteristics influence interaction between residential properties and surrounding streets and to identify design approaches that can support positive street environments. It is expected to contribute to a better understanding of how transparency, height, materials, landscaping, entrances, and setbacks influence social interaction, visibility, privacy, and perceived security. The findings can provide useful guidance for architects, urban designers, planners, developers, and homeowners seeking to create residential boundaries that provide security and privacy while maintaining active and visually connected streets.
