Assessment of Greenhouse Design for Urban Agricultural Production

Abstract

Urban agriculture has become an important approach for improving local food production, strengthening food security, and making productive use of limited urban land. Greenhouses provide controlled environments that can support crop production within densely developed areas while protecting plants from adverse weather conditions and allowing better management of growing conditions. However, the effectiveness of urban greenhouse systems depends significantly on their architectural and environmental design. This study assesses greenhouse design for urban agricultural production, with emphasis on spatial organization, environmental control, resource efficiency, and suitability for urban conditions. The study examines key architectural components of greenhouse facilities, including structural form, orientation, glazing systems, growing areas, access routes, service spaces, storage areas, water-management systems, and operational zones. It considers how the configuration and arrangement of these elements influence crop production and the efficient use of available urban land. Particular attention is given to the relationship between growing spaces, circulation paths, work areas, and supporting facilities required for planting, harvesting, maintenance, and distribution. Environmental performance is considered a major factor in greenhouse design. The study examines the influence of solar exposure, natural ventilation, temperature, humidity, daylight, shading, and glazing characteristics on growing conditions. Appropriate orientation and controlled openings can improve environmental regulation while reducing excessive heat accumulation. The study also considers the integration of shading systems, ventilation openings, thermal control measures, and other passive strategies suitable for urban climates. Water and energy efficiency are also examined as important aspects of sustainable greenhouse design. The study considers rainwater harvesting, irrigation efficiency, water recycling, solar energy systems, energy-efficient equipment, and appropriate drainage strategies. These measures can reduce dependence on external resources while supporting continuous agricultural production. The potential for integrating greenhouse systems with surrounding buildings, rooftops, courtyards, and other underutilized urban spaces is also considered as a strategy for maximizing limited land resources. The research further considers operational efficiency, accessibility, safety, and the relationship between greenhouse agriculture and the surrounding urban environment. Adequate circulation routes, working clearances, storage facilities, waste-management areas, and maintenance access are important for efficient agricultural activities. The study also considers potential issues such as structural safety, urban heat, visual impact, water management, and compatibility with surrounding land uses. Flexible design is considered necessary to accommodate different crop types, production methods, and changing urban agricultural requirements. The study aims to assess the architectural and environmental characteristics that contribute to effective greenhouse design for urban agricultural production. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, urban farmers, planners, agricultural developers, and policymakers in developing greenhouse systems that are productive, resource-efficient, adaptable, and compatible with urban environments. The study contributes to the advancement of sustainable urban agricultural architecture by demonstrating how thoughtful greenhouse design can support food production while making efficient use of space, water, energy, and other urban resources.
