Assessment of Reception-Lobby Spatial Requirements in Small Hotels

Abstract

Reception lobbies are important arrival and orientation spaces within small hotels, serving as points where guests enter, register, obtain information, wait, and connect with other hotel facilities. The spatial quality and organization of these areas can influence first impressions, ease of movement, service efficiency, and overall guest experience. In small hotels, limited floor area makes effective allocation of reception-lobby spaces particularly important. Assessing the spatial requirements of these areas can therefore support the development of compact yet functional hotel environments. This study assesses reception-lobby spatial requirements in small hotels, focusing on the functional spaces and relationships necessary to support efficient guest arrival and reception activities. The study examines reception desks, waiting areas, circulation spaces, luggage handling areas, guest information points, seating areas, and connections to major hotel functions. Attention is given to the spatial relationships between the lobby and guest rooms, restaurants, stairways, lifts, administrative areas, and service spaces. The assessment seeks to identify spatial arrangements that support smooth guest movement and efficient reception operations. The study further considers the influence of lobby layout on guest orientation and circulation. Clear entrance approaches, visible reception desks, logical pathways, adequate circulation widths, and appropriately positioned seating can help reduce confusion and congestion. The relationship between public, semi-public, and private areas is also examined to determine how spatial zoning can protect operational areas while maintaining convenient guest access. Particular attention is given to the transition between external arrival spaces and internal hotel functions. Environmental conditions are also important to the functionality of small hotel reception lobbies. Natural lighting, artificial lighting, ventilation, thermal comfort, acoustics, interior finishes, and visual quality can influence guest comfort and perception of the space. The study considers how these environmental factors can be integrated within relatively compact lobby areas without compromising circulation or functional requirements. Accessibility provisions, including step-free access, appropriate door widths, clear routes, and suitable seating arrangements, are also considered. Small hotels may face challenges such as restricted floor area, limited staffing, multiple functions within shared spaces, and the need to balance guest comfort with operational efficiency. Poorly planned reception lobbies may experience overcrowding, obstructed circulation, inadequate waiting areas, unclear wayfinding, or conflicts between guest and service movements. Addressing these challenges requires careful spatial planning that maximizes available floor area while maintaining appropriate separation between guest activities and hotel operations. Flexible furniture arrangements and multifunctional spaces may also improve the adaptability of compact hotel lobbies. The study aims to establish the major architectural and spatial requirements necessary for effective reception lobbies in small hotels. It is expected to identify appropriate provisions for reception, waiting, circulation, accessibility, orientation, environmental comfort, and functional zoning. The findings may provide useful guidance for architects, hotel operators, planners, and hospitality developers involved in the design or renovation of small hotel facilities. Properly planned reception-lobby spaces can contribute to improved guest experience, efficient hotel operations, clear circulation, and effective use of limited building space.
