Assessment of Security Features in Correctional Facility Design
Abstract
Correctional facilities require specialized architectural and security measures to maintain controlled environments while supporting the safe management of inmates, staff, visitors, and service personnel. Security features are closely connected to the planning, construction, and operation of correctional buildings, where uncontrolled access, inadequate surveillance, poor spatial organization, or weak physical barriers can create operational challenges. Effective security design should therefore be integrated into the architectural planning process rather than treated as a separate consideration. This study assesses security features in correctional facility design, with emphasis on the physical, spatial, and technological measures incorporated into correctional environments. The assessment considers perimeter walls, controlled entrances, security gates, observation points, secure doors, barriers, surveillance systems, lighting, circulation controls, and zoning arrangements. It examines how these features contribute to controlled access, monitoring, movement management, and overall facility security. Particular attention is given to spatial zoning and circulation control. Correctional facilities require clear separation between inmate accommodation, staff areas, administrative spaces, visitor zones, service areas, and restricted operational spaces. Appropriate zoning can establish different levels of security while limiting unnecessary movement between incompatible activities. Entrances, transition spaces, corridors, courtyards, and controlled access points are therefore examined as important components of a comprehensive security strategy. The study further considers surveillance and visibility within correctional environments. Strategic positioning of observation points, lighting systems, cameras, and visually connected spaces can support effective monitoring while reducing areas with limited visibility. The relationship between natural surveillance, technological systems, staff positioning, and spatial configuration is examined to determine how architectural planning can support continuous supervision and efficient security management. Other factors, including emergency preparedness, material durability, maintenance, accessibility, and environmental conditions, are also considered. Security features should remain functional under regular use and should be appropriately maintained to prevent deterioration. At the same time, correctional environments require adequate lighting, ventilation, sanitation, and accessible circulation while maintaining necessary security controls. The study therefore considers the need to balance security requirements with functional and human-centred design considerations. The study concludes that security features are fundamental components of effective correctional facility design and should be integrated with spatial planning, circulation, surveillance, access control, and operational requirements. A coordinated approach can strengthen facility management while supporting safety and controlled movement for different categories of users. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, correctional authorities, security professionals, planners, and policymakers involved in the design, assessment, and improvement of correctional facilities.
