Assessment of Spatial Flexibility in Multi-Purpose Buildings
Abstract
Spatial flexibility is an important consideration in the design of multi-purpose buildings because such facilities are expected to accommodate different activities, user groups, and changing functional requirements. Buildings that lack flexible spatial arrangements may experience underutilized areas, frequent modification costs, and difficulties in adapting spaces to new activities. Effective flexibility allows spaces to support multiple functions while maintaining comfort, accessibility, and operational efficiency. This study assesses spatial flexibility in multi-purpose buildings and examines the design characteristics that influence their ability to accommodate changing uses. The study focuses on the organization and configuration of spaces intended for different activities, including halls, meeting rooms, exhibition areas, recreational spaces, administrative areas, and support facilities. Factors such as room dimensions, structural spans, partitioning systems, circulation patterns, furniture arrangements, and service locations are examined. The relationship between these elements and the capacity of spaces to accommodate different functions is assessed to determine the extent to which existing spatial arrangements support adaptability. Movable partitions, flexible furniture, open-plan configurations, and modular planning can significantly improve the adaptability of multi-purpose spaces. These strategies allow spaces to be divided, combined, or reconfigured according to specific activities and occupancy requirements. The study therefore considers how physical and spatial elements can support rapid transformation between different uses without compromising functionality. Attention is also given to the ease with which spaces can be modified without major structural intervention. The assessment further considers the relationship between flexibility, circulation, accessibility, and building services. Flexible spaces require circulation routes and entrances that can support different occupancy patterns, while electrical, mechanical, lighting, and ventilation systems should accommodate changing layouts. Poor coordination between spatial planning and building services may restrict flexibility and make future modifications difficult. The study consequently examines how integrated planning can enhance the long-term adaptability of multi-purpose buildings. Operational and user-related factors also influence the effectiveness of spatial flexibility. Different activities may require variations in privacy, acoustics, lighting, furniture, equipment, and environmental conditions. A space that is flexible in physical configuration may still be unsuitable for certain functions if these requirements are not adequately addressed. The study therefore considers both physical adaptability and functional suitability in evaluating flexible multi-purpose environments. The study aims to provide a better understanding of the factors that contribute to effective spatial flexibility in multi-purpose buildings. It is expected to identify common limitations in existing flexible spaces and establish design considerations for improving adaptability, functionality, accessibility, and long-term usability. The findings will be useful to architects, planners, facility managers, and building developers in creating multi-purpose facilities capable of responding efficiently to changing activities, user needs, and operational requirements.
