Assessment of Spatial Planning in Cultural Centres
Abstract
Cultural centres serve as important public facilities for promoting cultural expression, education, social interaction, artistic activities, and community engagement. Their effectiveness depends greatly on appropriate spatial planning that accommodates diverse functions, user groups, and patterns of movement. Poorly planned cultural facilities may experience conflicts between public and restricted areas, inadequate circulation, insufficient support spaces, and inefficient relationships between major activity zones. Assessing spatial planning is therefore essential for improving the functionality, accessibility, and overall user experience of cultural centres. This study assesses spatial planning in selected cultural centres, with emphasis on the organization and relationship of major functional spaces. The study examines the distribution of performance areas, exhibition spaces, galleries, workshops, meeting rooms, administrative offices, reception areas, service spaces, and outdoor gathering areas. It also evaluates how these spaces are arranged to support different cultural activities and accommodate varying levels of public access. The assessment considers the effectiveness of spatial relationships in supporting the operational requirements of cultural facilities. Particular attention is given to circulation planning and spatial hierarchy within cultural centres. The study examines pedestrian movement, entrances, transition spaces, vertical and horizontal circulation, wayfinding, and the separation of public, semi-public, private, and service zones. The relationship between major activity spaces and supporting facilities is also considered to determine whether users can move efficiently between different areas. Effective circulation planning is important for reducing congestion, improving accessibility, and creating clear and understandable movement patterns. The study further considers environmental and user-oriented factors that influence spatial quality. These include natural lighting, ventilation, acoustics, visual connections, seating areas, accessibility provisions, flexibility, and opportunities for social interaction. The ability of spaces to accommodate different cultural events and changing patterns of use is also examined. Such factors are important because cultural centres often host activities with different spatial, environmental, and operational requirements. Several challenges may affect spatial planning in cultural centres, including inadequate zoning, poor functional relationships, limited flexibility, insufficient support spaces, circulation conflicts, and inadequate consideration of users with different abilities. Addressing these challenges requires an integrated planning approach that combines functional requirements, user needs, accessibility standards, environmental considerations, and cultural programming. Well-organized spatial planning can enhance operational efficiency while creating welcoming environments that encourage participation and cultural exchange. The study concludes that effective spatial planning is essential to the functionality, accessibility, and user satisfaction of cultural centres. It recommends clear functional zoning, efficient circulation systems, flexible activity spaces, appropriate service relationships, and inclusive design strategies. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, planners, facility managers, and cultural organizations in developing cultural centres that effectively support artistic activities, community interaction, cultural education, and public engagement.
