Assessment of User Satisfaction with Contemporary Public Building Design

Abstract

Contemporary public buildings serve diverse groups of users and are expected to provide functional, accessible, comfortable, and visually appealing environments. The quality of architectural design can significantly influence how users perceive and interact with these buildings. However, differences in spatial organization, circulation, environmental conditions, accessibility, aesthetics, and supporting facilities may affect users' overall experiences. Assessing user satisfaction is therefore important for understanding how effectively contemporary public buildings respond to the needs and expectations of their occupants and visitors. This study assesses user satisfaction with contemporary public building design by examining users' perceptions of key architectural and environmental characteristics. Particular attention is given to spatial layout, circulation, accessibility, functionality, visual quality, lighting, ventilation, thermal comfort, acoustics, privacy, and the provision of supporting facilities. The study considers how these design attributes influence users' comfort, convenience, efficiency, and overall perception of the building environment. The assessment further explores the relationship between functional planning and user experience. Clear circulation routes, appropriate spatial relationships, adequate activity areas, and effective zoning can improve ease of movement and support efficient building use. Similarly, well-designed entrances, waiting areas, service spaces, and communal areas can enhance users' sense of convenience and satisfaction. The study also considers the extent to which contemporary design approaches respond to different user groups and accommodate varying patterns of use. Environmental and aesthetic qualities are also considered important components of user satisfaction. Natural lighting, ventilation, shading, appropriate material selection, acoustic conditions, and indoor environmental comfort can influence users' physical and psychological experiences. At the same time, building appearance, proportions, finishes, landscaping, visual coherence, and integration with the surrounding environment may affect perceptions of attractiveness, identity, and architectural quality. Despite advances in contemporary public building design, challenges may arise from inadequate consideration of user needs during the design and post-occupancy stages. Poor accessibility, confusing circulation, insufficient environmental control, limited flexibility, inadequate maintenance, and weak relationships between functional spaces can reduce user satisfaction. Understanding these shortcomings can assist designers and building managers in identifying areas that require improvement and developing more user-responsive public buildings. The study aims to evaluate the level of user satisfaction with contemporary public building design and identify the architectural factors that most strongly influence users' experiences. The findings are expected to provide useful information for architects, planners, developers, and facility managers in improving the functionality, comfort, accessibility, and aesthetic quality of public buildings. Ultimately, the study seeks to promote contemporary public environments that are responsive to diverse user needs and capable of delivering positive and satisfactory experiences.
