Effect of Interior Circulation Width on User Movement in Commercial Buildings
Abstract
The study examines the effect of interior circulation width on user movement in commercial buildings, with emphasis on how the dimensions of corridors, passageways, walkways, and other internal circulation spaces influence the ease, speed, and safety of movement within buildings. Adequate circulation space is essential in commercial buildings because such facilities accommodate different categories of users and may experience varying levels of pedestrian activity. Inadequate circulation width may result in congestion, restricted movement, uncomfortable encounters, and difficulty accessing different parts of the building. The study will assess the relationship between interior circulation width and user movement in selected commercial buildings. Attention will be given to corridor and passageway dimensions, movement routes, intersections, entrance connections, stair and lift approaches, waiting areas, and areas with high pedestrian activity. User movement will be assessed through indicators such as pedestrian flow, movement speed, congestion, travel time, frequency of obstruction, ease of passing, route selection, and users’ perception of circulation adequacy. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of selected commercial buildings and their users will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through physical measurements of circulation spaces, direct observation, pedestrian movement counts, movement mapping, photographic documentation, and structured questionnaires. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate comparative and correlation techniques will be applied to examine the relationship between circulation width and user movement. The study is expected to reveal that circulation width has a measurable influence on user movement within commercial buildings. Wider circulation spaces are expected to provide greater freedom of movement, reduce pedestrian conflicts, support smoother two-way movement, and minimize congestion during periods of high activity. Narrow circulation routes may increase obstruction, movement delays, uncomfortable encounters, and difficulty for users moving in opposite directions. The effect may also vary according to pedestrian volume, building function, furniture placement, entrance locations, visibility, and the presence of fixed or temporary obstructions. The findings will be useful to architects, interior designers, facility managers, building owners, developers, and other professionals involved in commercial building design and management. The study may provide useful information for determining suitable circulation dimensions and identifying areas where movement problems occur. It may also support the planning of commercial interiors that provide efficient pedestrian circulation, improved accessibility, user comfort, and better spatial organization. The study will conclude by establishing the effect of interior circulation width on user movement in commercial buildings and emphasizing the importance of adequate circulation space in supporting safe and efficient building use. It is recommended that circulation routes be appropriately dimensioned according to expected user volume and building function, while furniture, displays, and other obstructions should be properly positioned to maintain clear movement paths. Further studies should examine circulation requirements across different types of commercial buildings and varying levels of pedestrian activity.
