Effect of Sustainable Landscaping on Outdoor Environmental Quality

Abstract

The study examines the effect of sustainable landscaping on outdoor environmental quality, with emphasis on how environmentally responsible landscape practices influence the physical and functional conditions of outdoor spaces. Sustainable landscaping involves the use of appropriate vegetation, efficient water management, suitable ground surfaces, soil conservation, shading, and landscape maintenance practices that reduce environmental impact while improving the quality of outdoor areas. Understanding its contribution to outdoor environmental quality is important for creating healthier, more comfortable, and environmentally responsive built environments. The study will assess selected sustainable landscaping features and their relationship with outdoor environmental conditions. The assessment will consider factors such as vegetation type and coverage, tree canopy, ground surfaces, shading, water-use practices, soil conditions, drainage, landscape maintenance, and the arrangement of planted and paved areas. Outdoor environmental quality will be examined using indicators such as air temperature, surface temperature, relative humidity, shading conditions, air movement, visual quality, and users’ perception of outdoor comfort. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. Selected landscaped outdoor spaces will be identified using an appropriate sampling technique based on variations in landscaping characteristics and environmental conditions. Data will be collected through field observation, landscape measurements, environmental monitoring, photographic documentation, and structured questionnaires where necessary. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate comparative and inferential techniques will be applied to determine differences in outdoor environmental quality associated with sustainable landscaping practices. The study is expected to reveal differences in outdoor environmental quality between spaces with varying levels of sustainable landscaping. Areas with adequate vegetation, tree canopy, permeable surfaces, appropriate shading, and well-managed landscape features are expected to demonstrate more favourable thermal and environmental conditions. Such spaces may experience lower surface temperatures, improved humidity conditions, greater shading, and enhanced user comfort. However, the effectiveness of sustainable landscaping may vary according to vegetation characteristics, spatial arrangement, surface materials, maintenance practices, surrounding buildings, and climatic conditions. The findings will be useful to architects, landscape architects, urban planners, property developers, environmental designers, facility managers, and other professionals involved in the planning and management of outdoor spaces. The study will provide information on landscape strategies that can improve outdoor environmental quality while supporting environmental sustainability. It may also assist in promoting the integration of vegetation, shading, permeable surfaces, and resource-efficient landscape practices into residential, institutional, commercial, and public developments. The study will conclude by establishing the effect of sustainable landscaping on outdoor environmental quality and identifying landscape features associated with improved environmental conditions. It is recommended that sustainable landscaping principles should be incorporated into the planning, design, and management of outdoor spaces, with appropriate attention to vegetation selection, shading, water efficiency, surface treatment, drainage, and maintenance. Further studies involving different landscape settings and climatic conditions are recommended to provide broader guidance for sustainable landscape design and outdoor environmental improvement.
