Influence of Accessible Toilet Design on User Convenience

Abstract

The study examines the influence of accessible toilet design on user convenience. Accessible toilets are designed to accommodate people with different mobility and functional needs through appropriate spatial dimensions, circulation areas, fixture positioning, support features, and ease of movement. The quality of these design features can influence how conveniently users enter, move within, use, and exit toilet facilities. The study will assess accessible toilet design features and determine their influence on user convenience in selected buildings. Attention will be given to factors such as doorway width, internal circulation space, turning areas, toilet and washbasin positioning, grab bars, floor conditions, accessibility of fittings, and ease of movement within the facility. User convenience will be assessed based on ease of access, movement, use of fixtures, privacy, safety, and overall satisfaction with the toilet facility. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. Selected buildings with accessible toilet facilities will be identified using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through physical observation, dimensional assessment of toilet facilities, structured questionnaires, and user responses. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate comparative and correlation tests will be used to determine the relationship between accessible toilet design features and user convenience. The study is expected to reveal that differences in accessible toilet design features influence users’ levels of convenience. Toilets with adequate circulation space, appropriately positioned fixtures, suitable support facilities, accessible entrances, and safe floor surfaces are expected to provide greater convenience and ease of use. Conversely, inadequate dimensions, poorly positioned fittings, restricted movement areas, and unsuitable support features may create difficulties and reduce user satisfaction. The findings will be useful to architects, building designers, facility managers, accessibility consultants, building regulators, and other professionals involved in the planning and management of public and residential buildings. The study may provide useful information for improving accessible toilet facilities and promoting inclusive building design. It may also support the development of toilet environments that enhance safety, independence, privacy, dignity, and convenience for users with different mobility needs. The study will conclude by determining the influence of accessible toilet design on user convenience. It is recommended that accessible toilet facilities should be designed with adequate circulation space, appropriate fixture positioning, suitable support features, safe floor conditions, and convenient access points. Further studies involving different building types and a wider range of users are recommended to provide broader information on accessible toilet design and inclusive building performance.
