Influence of Building Orientation on Energy Consumption in Residential Buildings

Abstract

The study examines the influence of building orientation on energy consumption in residential buildings, with emphasis on how the positioning of buildings and their major facades relative to the sun, prevailing winds, and surrounding environmental conditions affects household energy use. Building orientation is an important aspect of climate-responsive residential design because it influences solar exposure, heat gain, natural ventilation, daylight availability, and the need for mechanical cooling and artificial lighting. Appropriate orientation may therefore contribute to reduced energy demand and improved indoor environmental conditions. The study will assess the relationship between building orientation and energy consumption in selected residential buildings. Attention will be given to the direction of major facades, window orientation, building form, solar exposure, shading elements, natural ventilation opportunities, and the relationship between building orientation and surrounding structures. Energy consumption will be assessed using available electricity records, energy-use patterns, cooling requirements, lighting use, and occupants’ reported use of electrical appliances. The study will also consider factors such as building size, construction materials, occupancy, and appliance use when interpreting energy consumption patterns. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of selected residential buildings and their occupants will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through physical observation, orientation measurements, building surveys, environmental assessments, electricity consumption records where available, photographic documentation, and structured questionnaires. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate comparative and correlation techniques will be applied to examine the relationship between building orientation and residential energy consumption. The study is expected to reveal that building orientation has a measurable influence on residential energy consumption. Buildings with orientations that reduce excessive solar heat gain while supporting natural ventilation and daylighting are expected to demonstrate lower dependence on mechanical cooling and artificial lighting. Poorly oriented buildings may experience greater heat exposure and increased cooling demand, particularly during periods of high outdoor temperature. The relationship may also vary according to window size and orientation, shading devices, building materials, roof configuration, occupancy patterns, appliance use, and surrounding structures. The findings will be useful to architects, residential designers, developers, building professionals, energy consultants, and homeowners involved in residential planning and design. The study may provide practical information for incorporating orientation into energy-conscious building design and reducing unnecessary household energy consumption. It may also support climate-responsive architectural practices that combine appropriate building positioning with shading, natural ventilation, daylighting, and suitable building-envelope strategies. The study will conclude by establishing the influence of building orientation on energy consumption in residential buildings and emphasizing the importance of considering orientation during the early stages of architectural planning. It is recommended that residential buildings be appropriately oriented to respond to solar exposure, prevailing environmental conditions, ventilation opportunities, and daylight availability, while other passive design measures should be integrated to improve energy performance. Further studies should examine building orientation and energy consumption across different residential building types, climatic conditions, and household energy-use patterns.

Keywords: Building orientation, energy consumption, residential buildings, energy efficiency, passive design, climate-responsive design, solar exposure, heat gain, natural ventilation, daylighting, residential energy use, building performance, solar radiation, sustainable architecture, building design.
