Influence of Lobby Configuration on Circulation Efficiency in Commercial Buildings
Abstract
The study examines the influence of lobby configuration on circulation efficiency in commercial buildings, with emphasis on how the spatial arrangement and organization of lobby areas affect the movement of occupants and visitors. Lobbies serve as important transition spaces that connect building entrances with circulation routes, stairs, lifts, reception areas, and other functional spaces. Their configuration can therefore influence movement patterns, wayfinding, congestion, accessibility, and the overall efficiency of circulation within commercial buildings. The study will assess selected lobby configuration characteristics, including lobby size, shape, entrance location, circulation paths, reception placement, lift and staircase positioning, corridor connections, waiting areas, visibility, and the distribution of access points. Circulation efficiency will be assessed through indicators such as movement distance, ease of navigation, pedestrian flow, congestion points, waiting time, accessibility, and users’ perception of movement within the building. Attention will also be given to how spatial relationships between lobby elements influence the clarity and continuity of circulation routes. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. Selected commercial buildings will be assessed through physical observation, dimensional measurements, circulation mapping, pedestrian movement observation, and structured questionnaires administered to building users. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate comparative or correlation tests may be applied to determine the relationship between lobby configuration and circulation efficiency. The study is expected to reveal that well-organized lobby configurations with clear circulation paths, appropriate positioning of vertical circulation elements, adequate entrance space, good visibility, and logical connections to adjoining spaces may support more efficient movement. Poorly arranged reception areas, restricted circulation routes, unclear access points, inadequate space, and conflicting movement paths may contribute to congestion, longer movement distances, and difficulties in navigation. Differences in circulation efficiency are also expected to reflect variations in building size, occupancy levels, and functional organization. The findings will be useful to architects, building designers, urban designers, facility managers, developers, and other professionals involved in commercial building planning and management. The study may provide useful information for improving lobby layouts and establishing clearer relationships between entrance spaces and major circulation elements. The findings may also support the design of commercial buildings that provide efficient, accessible, and user-friendly movement environments. The study will conclude by establishing the influence of lobby configuration on circulation efficiency in commercial buildings. It is recommended that lobby design should provide adequate space, clear movement routes, good visibility, appropriately positioned reception and vertical circulation elements, and unobstructed connections to adjoining spaces. Further studies involving different commercial building types, occupancy patterns, and circulation configurations are recommended to provide broader guidance for efficient lobby and circulation design.
