Influence of Window Opening Type on Indoor Air Movement

Abstract

The study examines the influence of window opening type on indoor air movement, with emphasis on how different window opening mechanisms affect the entry, direction, and distribution of air within occupied building spaces. Windows are important components of naturally ventilated buildings because their opening type determines the extent to which outdoor air can enter and indoor air can escape. The configuration and operation of window openings can therefore influence ventilation effectiveness, indoor air movement, and thermal comfort. The study will assess different window opening types, including casement, sliding, louvered, awning, top-hung, and other commonly used configurations. Relevant characteristics will include opening mechanism, opening area, direction of operation, position on the wall, height, orientation, and degree of operability. Indoor air movement will be assessed using indicators such as air velocity, direction of airflow, ventilation conditions, indoor temperature, relative humidity, and occupants’ perception of airflow and thermal comfort. A descriptive comparative research design will be adopted for the study. Selected buildings or rooms with different window opening types will be assessed through physical observation, dimensional measurements, window-opening assessments, indoor environmental monitoring, photographic documentation, and structured questionnaires administered to occupants where appropriate. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate comparative or correlation tests may be applied to determine differences in indoor air movement associated with different window opening types. The study is expected to reveal differences in indoor air movement among spaces with different window opening types. Window configurations that allow larger effective openings and direct or guide outdoor airflow into occupied spaces may provide stronger and more evenly distributed air movement. Other opening types may provide more limited airflow depending on their operating mechanism, opening direction, position, and surrounding obstructions. The observed performance may also be influenced by building orientation, wind conditions, room layout, opening size, and the presence of other ventilation openings. The findings will be useful to architects, building designers, housing developers, environmental designers, facility managers, and other professionals involved in building planning and construction. The study may provide useful information for selecting appropriate window opening types as part of passive ventilation strategies. The findings may also support the design of residential and other naturally ventilated buildings that provide improved indoor air movement, thermal comfort, and reduced dependence on mechanical cooling and ventilation systems. The study will conclude by establishing the influence of window opening type on indoor air movement. It is recommended that window opening mechanisms should be selected based on their effective opening area, airflow direction, building orientation, room configuration, and prevailing environmental conditions. Further studies involving different climatic conditions, window sizes, building forms, and combinations of opening types are recommended to provide broader guidance for effective natural ventilation design.
