Relationship Between Architectural Documentation and Construction Errors
Abstract
The study examines the relationship between architectural documentation and construction errors, with emphasis on how the quality, completeness, accuracy, and coordination of architectural drawings and specifications influence errors during building construction. Architectural documentation provides essential information for translating design intentions into physical structures, and deficiencies in drawings or specifications may create uncertainty, misinterpretation, omissions, inconsistencies, and discrepancies during construction. Such problems may result in rework, material wastage, delays, additional costs, and reduced construction quality. The study will assess the quality of architectural documentation and identify common construction errors associated with documentation deficiencies. Attention will be given to the clarity and completeness of drawings, dimensional accuracy, consistency between plans and elevations, detailing, specifications, schedules, drawing revisions, information coordination, and communication of design requirements. Construction errors will be assessed in relation to inaccurate dimensions, missing information, conflicting details, incorrect material specifications, improper interpretation of drawings, and deviations from the documented design. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of selected construction projects, architects, contractors, site supervisors, and other relevant construction professionals will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through architectural document reviews, site inspections, error checklists, project records, questionnaires, and interviews. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate correlation and comparative techniques will be applied to determine the relationship between architectural documentation and construction errors. The study is expected to reveal that deficiencies in architectural documentation are associated with increased occurrence of construction errors. Incomplete drawings, inconsistent dimensions, unclear details, outdated revisions, and poor coordination between architectural documents may contribute to misinterpretation, incorrect construction work, rework, material wastage, and project delays. Projects with clearer, more complete, coordinated, and regularly updated architectural documentation are expected to experience fewer documentation-related construction errors, although other factors such as site supervision, contractor experience, workmanship, communication, and project complexity may also influence error occurrence. The findings will be useful to architects, contractors, quantity surveyors, project managers, site supervisors, consultants, and other professionals involved in building design and construction. The study may provide useful information on the importance of accurate and coordinated architectural documentation in reducing avoidable construction errors and improving project delivery. It may also support architectural practices and construction organizations in strengthening drawing review procedures, document coordination, revision control, and communication between design and construction teams. The study will conclude by establishing the relationship between architectural documentation and construction errors and emphasizing the importance of reliable construction information throughout the project lifecycle. It is recommended that architectural documents be carefully reviewed, coordinated, clearly detailed, accurately dimensioned, and properly updated before and during construction. Effective communication, document control, interdisciplinary coordination, and systematic site verification should also be encouraged, while further studies may examine documentation-related errors across different building types and construction project scales.
