Relationship Between Indigenous Architectural Features and Community Identity
Abstract
The study examines the relationship between indigenous architectural features and community identity, with emphasis on how traditional building elements contribute to the cultural, social, and visual character of communities. Indigenous architectural features may include traditional building forms, locally available materials, decorative patterns, spatial arrangements, roof forms, courtyards, entrances, colours, and construction techniques that reflect the history and cultural practices of a community. Understanding the relationship between these features and community identity is important for promoting architectural designs that reflect local heritage while responding to contemporary development needs. The study will assess selected indigenous architectural features within the study area and examine their relationship with community identity. Attention will be given to the presence, characteristics, preservation, use, and adaptation of traditional architectural elements in residential, communal, and other relevant buildings. The study will also examine community perceptions of cultural representation, sense of belonging, heritage recognition, visual identity, social attachment, and the extent to which indigenous architectural features are considered important to the character of the community. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of selected buildings, community members, architects, traditional stakeholders, and other relevant participants will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through physical observation, architectural documentation, photographic surveys, building assessments, questionnaires, and interviews where applicable. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate correlation or comparative techniques will be applied to examine the relationship between indigenous architectural features and community identity. The study is expected to reveal that the presence and continued use of indigenous architectural features are associated with stronger recognition of local cultural character and community identity. Traditional forms, materials, spatial arrangements, decorative elements, and construction techniques may contribute to residents’ sense of belonging, cultural continuity, and visual recognition of their environment. However, the influence of these features may vary according to the extent of modernization, changing lifestyles, availability of local materials, construction costs, development pressures, and community attitudes toward traditional architecture. The findings will be useful to architects, urban planners, cultural heritage professionals, community leaders, developers, local authorities, and other stakeholders involved in architectural and community development. The study may provide useful information for incorporating appropriate indigenous architectural elements into contemporary development while maintaining cultural relevance and functional suitability. It may also support heritage conservation, culturally responsive design, and planning approaches that strengthen the visual and social identity of communities. The study will conclude by establishing the relationship between indigenous architectural features and community identity and emphasizing the importance of considering local architectural heritage in contemporary development. It is recommended that architects and planning authorities document significant indigenous features, encourage appropriate community participation in design decisions, and promote suitable adaptation of traditional elements in new developments. Further studies should examine indigenous architectural characteristics across different communities to support culturally responsive architectural practice and sustainable heritage conservation.
